This picture was taken in the late afternoon on the streets of the famed Pink City of Jaipur, a hectic maddening and congested vibrant place! Despite the crowd, attention is always on the ground level where the action is but frankly it is extremely difficult to get a decent moving subject as the bustling traffics of all kinds pass by and people get in the way.
Ideally I could have composed the rickshaw a little bit "back" to the right picture, so that it looks like he had some room to go, and it's always easier said than done! So, this is the most acceptable shot, taken under this very frustrating circumstances out of two dozen images with monopod mounted. Cropped some dead space at the bottom to a letterbox format.
To me panning is a percentage game; one in ten good shots is major league success; one in 100 is not out of the ordinary,
But that ONE will be worth the trouble......

really like this piece of motion.the pic really represents the feel of riding on a rickshaw through the congested and meandering alleys of indian(specially north indian)cities.this shot is really worth the trouble.

Brilliant motion capture, this looks really cool, and amazing how clear the rickshaw is in this! This is a type of shot I have long since admired, but one that I am useless at actually executing, so a double pleasure to see this. As you say, maybe 1 in 100 will be worth it, but its very much well worth it!!
All the best

this shot is fantastic. I don't know if I will ever be able to take pictures like this but I have studied yours as well as the rare panning shots posted by other TE members. I love the effect and think that this is one of the best I've seen. I don't think the position of the ricksaw in the frame is a problem thanks to its framing by the scooters that make the flow of movement continuous across the frame. The clarity on the ricksaw and its people is stunning. I also love the soft light and the deep warm and cold colours in a marvellous mix. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,

Ciao e buona serata

You're capturing well this traffic space by a good focus, a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the rickshaw in FG and motorcycles with moving effect of backdrop. You catch well one feature of the daily life in this town.

This is one of the panning shots which can be difficult as the rickshaws can be tricky fast. Sometimes you have to shot countless frames and none of them is the one you wanted. It happened to me. So I'm glad that you mastered as good one nonetheless. Well done

brilliant and at the same time captivating daily-life capture from Jaipur.
Just love the effect of movement you created here. The rickshaw in sharp, clear view and so nicely blurred background. It makes the scene so expressive and eye-catching!We get also good impression here of how busy the streets are.Bustling and full of life scene, but thanks to your treatment and "frozen"just a detail of the image we feel calmness and tranquility separated from surrounding "crazy" life around.
rogerl (1544) 2013-05-23 5:00
Abmdsudi, the foreground rickshaw really is remarkably clear, and the background makes it clear that you were panning perfectly horizontally. Really well-done; this is the kind of shot that I would never have the courage to execute. It really gives a strong feel of movement throughout, and I don't find the subject being center-left detracts from the image at all. Thanks.

This is one form of transport we don't have in Las Vegas, not yet. Great panning technique and good focus and isolation of the rickshaw with so much action as indicated the blurred movement of others. Good lighting. Very well done, tfs.
danos (90317) 2013-05-23 11:07
nice the view of the passing by rickshaw, with the panning effect to makes the image even more effective and unique.I like the successful action as the good presentation.

I have taken panning shots of race horses, which is fairly easy. Doing it in a crowded Indian city is a very different matter. You have done very well with good sharpness in the right places. The blurred background gives a good idea of the hustle and bustle of an Indian street.
Long ago I once had the privilege of travelling with motorcades through central Jaipur, and later Bangalore, all streets having been carefully emptied by the police and the sidewalks packed with people. It was a strange and unique experience of going at a very high speed through large Indian cities.

Une composition excellente, une scène merveilleusement capturer, nette avec le flou dynamique de la circulation, un très beau travail, que je n'ai jamais eu de bon résultat, compliment

I like this image with movement.
mkamionka (32469) 2013-05-24 23:52
yes it is worth to take 100 pictures to get one like this. I really appreciate your honesty here as some people would probably simply say that they are so great and that is why they succeeded. You are great indeed but in shots like this the statistics plays a big role too. The effect is fantastic, I would not worry too much about the space in front of the rickshaw. You caught the rider and the passenger in a good pose and the movement is quite clearly emphasized.
nikkitta (16758) 2013-05-25 13:34
So, for once it was not taken at the beginning of the day but during it and in a rush hour , it seems
Good way of panning , it adds more emphasis and sense of movement at the capture, not at all worried by the position of the rickshaw, not easy to do in the right angle
Have a great Sunday

A very well done panning shot. I tried this in Hanoi with no success so I know how difficult it is to get it right. You have captured the spirit of Jaipur with the busy traffic and even a hint of the pink walls in the BG. Very well done.
Kind Regards, Ann
mcmtanyel (16625) 2013-06-13 19:59
I, too, am a fan of panning. Your words about the statistics of successful shots encourage me. So it is not just I who has deleted frame after frame of unsuccessful pans. This one of yours has come out very nice. I see your point about positioning the rickshaw but I also realize how difficult it is. I usually cheat: I use a wider angle setting on the zoom and try to place the subject right in the middle. Then, if the pan has been a success, I have ample space to crop for the right effect. Of course, with that "trick", the only blur I get in the background is motion blur, not the focal blur you have so successfully attained here.
