Photographer's Note

When I look at this photo, I see the haveli when it was newly built. There would be a family of several generations living here. The painting inside and out would be fresh, the colours bright. Warm evenings would be spent on the rooftop. There would be laughter and food and children playing. The dwelling would form a vibrant part of the Fatehpur community. As with the majority of havelis in Shekhawati, now the owners appear to have abandoned it - moving away to Mumbai, Delhi or Kolkatta. The colours have faded. Its vibrancy has vanished, and the builders' and artists' labour of love has been lost. So sad!
