India celebrated the Hindu festival "Janmashtami" yesterday, marking the birth of arguably India’s most loved God Lord Krishna also known as Govinda, with much pomp and splendour. The birth of Krishna is in itself a transcendental phenomenon that generates awe among the Hindus and overwhelms one and all with its supra mundane happenings.
The Janmashtami celebration of Mathura and Vrindavan, the places where Sri Krishna had spent his life, are very special. On this day, temples and homes are wonderfully decorated and illuminated. Night long prayers are offered and religious mantras are sung in the temples. In other places, the day is celebrated with dramatic play Ras Lila and Dahi Handi.
Dahi Handi marks the mischievous and playful behaviour of Lord Krishna. According to Hindu mythology, Krishna along with his friends, known as govindas, formed a human pyramid to break an earthen pot filled with butter hanging from an elevated rope. Amid chants of “Govinda ala re” (Govinda is coming), Mumbaikars celebrated the ‘dahi hand i’ on Janmashtami day. The ‘Govindas’ form human pyramids and stand on top of one another, attempting to break clay pots filled with butter or curd tied to ropes even as their efforts were thwarted by water splashed on them by those gathered around. Hundreds of ‘ Govinda mandals (groups)’ participate in the festival at various places in the metropolis where human pyramids were formed to reach the pots and win cash prizes. The festival is inspired by the mythological tale of Lord Krishna’s boyhood trick of stealing butter from a suspended earthen pot.
If you are wondering what’s going on in the picture, you can check the Workshop to see a Govinda pyramid in formation.
Epilogue : Notwithstanding the fact that every year, there are accidents when the human pyramid collapses & the govindas fall down either to death or incur serious injuries....enthusiasm to create higher & higher pyramids grows unabated.

The dark frame is putting the acrobats in evidence. The point of view is showing thheir action and the details and colours of their clothings. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colours. Have a nice day.

Une très belle contre plongée qui donne encore plus l'impression du danger qui guette le jeune homme au sommet de la pyramide.J'aime les couleurs qui ressortent bien malgré le contre jour.

dear dada, a nice moment from the auspicious day. Great composition. Probably I saw a picture like this may be 4 years ago here. Anyway, the vertical presentation is nice. Nice light. You are lucky to get such heavy and dark sky at top that enables you to shot such shot without a blown out sky. Darun chhobi. Khub sundor composition. Tfs.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

While the ws photo shows us more clearly what is going on, you found a fascinating POV for this shot. I think the cloudy sky even improves the composition as we are watching from far below the top of the human pyramid, reaching for the sky. The diagonal wire with the garland is a fine detail and I really love the bird that happend to come flying by. One could imagine it has just been let loose from the hand streched out at the top.
This is a really lively and superb picture.

Very honest and positive record of the special event and as always great fun watching the young participants who are all enjoying themselves trying to accomplish the job up there. Their expression and such determination going into that and your shooting angle are my favourite, it's a fantastic image filled with lot of vivid colours & bit of humour too and it looks like a good time was had by all! Must be a wonderful festival, tx to the additional picture, I can only enjoy it through your excellent images. You have produced a vibrant documentary shot of their activities so vividly. My congrats

Great low-angle shot formed to recreate one of Krishna's activities !
What's so amazing in the shot is that the child seems to be aiming at the bird that happenend to be flying by just at that time ! What a capture !
I don't suppose he caught the bird :-) But did he manage to break the clay-pot ?
I also note the skill of these people and child forming the pyramid + the life-jacket worn by the child in case of an accident.
Thanks for sharing.

The bg decorations resemble a caterpillar. Good sharpness and a nice warm vs cold colour contrast between the blue and orange. Fantastic sharpness and a good capture of the celebration of this festival. The bird is well positioned in the frame. Tfs!
