Hodka Village is located in the district of Kachchh (Kutch) in the state of Gujarat in India. It lies at the distance of 63 km from Bhuj. The name Hodka is derived from the Gujarati word 'hodi' which means boat. Hodka village is believed to have been set up by the 'Halepotra' clan from Sindh who were cattle herders in search of pastures. This was around 300 years ago! The Meghwals, who came originally from Marwar in Rajasthan to Sindh in Pakistan in the 17th century, have also settled in Hodka over time.
The amount of jewellery worn by the women & girls of Kachchh amazed us! Meghwal women are known for their colorful and exuberantly detailed costumes and jewellery. Married women wear an elaborate gold nose ring called 'Velado.' It is a sign of marriage and worn only on special occasions. They also wear white bangles from their elbow right covering their upper arm.
Even in a normal day, the ladies of the house wear these elaborate 'jewellery' and dress in fine bright saris, even while performing daily chores..."Decked Up"

nice daily life photography dada. Light is a bit harsh and tough to control, but you managed is reasonably well... Bhalo chhobi with the hugely ornamented local lady. Thanks for sharing.

the colors of india are there with all their humble glory, and the most amazing thing is to see those colors are there even in the most unexpected moment of daily life. i mean, it is not a ceremony, but only a moment of laundry, still the lady wears all the colors possible in this world. i read your note and saw that you were even amazed with this. everybody knows that india could be and perhaps is the most colorful country in the world. i just wonder why is that so. the answer is maybe written in long books about indian culture and history :)

This dress and the "jewellery" may be uncomfortable but it is truly magnificent and impressive. Taking photos in India wuld be less fun without the colourful women. The picture gains some action from the way the woman is looking to her right, slightly upwards. As so often the light seems to have been difficult but you have smoothened the harsh contrasts very cleverly.

J'aime beaucoup ce portrait. La dame dans ses vêtements originaux très colorés montre bien la vie quotidienne des dames dans cette région du monde. Pas toujours facile de faire le lavage dans ces conditions.

You have captured the suprised or questionning expression of the woman. The point of view is showing the details and colours of her clothings. The good luminosity is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

I can only imagine the amount of photo opportunities in a country like India, especially of the colorful attire that the women wear - this is the perfect example.

You are a master of portraits.
Fantastic facial expression of this woman.
Fantastic colors of the image.
abmdsudi (39482) 2013-06-26 22:22
Superb close up of a woman doing her daily chores as the beautiful bright colourful sari pops out against the sunlight and the setting and this draws attention straightaway. The balance is right and unobtrusive which gives her facial feature a more substantial feel under shade while allowing more space for her suprise looking eye to glance through. You have preserved the atmosphere and mood very well, a picture showing glimpse into the daily life here well detailed and the way everything pulls together with the colour/tones and vibrant. Great capture! Congrats

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
a fantastic capture of the daily life in this composition, a nice portrait of the lady in her daily chores, with a colorful costume.
I like the beautiful colors and the great sharpness of the image.
A nice work.
PS: My activity in the site is a bit low the last weeks, because I'm very busy in my job. Thanks for your interest.

And here is the mother dressed like a princess, although she is living and working a very simple, kind of primitive life ! Amazing the amount of efficient work they can do with all that jewellery !
Even the sari would bother me in my movements !
But they wear it all so graciously !
Thanks for these beautiful everyday portraits.
aloyho (6798) 2013-08-10 6:40
As you mentioned in your note this should be a daily occurence and you must be quite used to this scene but the opportunity to sharpen ones photographic skills is hard to resist as there is so much technical aspects to consider here. The lighting is tricky and the mood ever changing. I particularly like the way you handled the back lighting as seen from the sari just above her shoulders where it is beautifully lit from the back while her face is in good control. Great shot here!!!
Have a great weekend. Regards.
