Photographer’s Note

Firewood for sale on a square in Diu town, western India, in October 1985. Obviously this is a women's domain, like most things concerning the household.
Diu is a small island with one town just outside the Gujarat coast. It was a Portuguese colony until 1961 when the Indian army occupied the territory, along with Goa and Daman. The Portuguese legacy is clearly visible in the architecture.
If anyone is puzzled by the painting of two leaves on the pillar to the left, it's the symbol of the United Goans Democratic Party. It's a leftover from the election campaign one year earlier.
This picture was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.
