This photo takes you back in time again, this time to 1985.
It shows you part of what was then the future of India, a group of school girls. If time has been good to them they have now made fine careers for themselves and taken their rightful places in the vanguard of society.
I saw these girls and their teachers outside the guesthouse where I was staying in Diu town. Diu is a narrow island and a former Portuguese colony located just outside the mainland of the state of Gujarat in western India. It's Gujarat you can see across the water.
The teachers were of course too mature and sophisticated to be bothered with a tourist with a camera, but the girls seemed to enjoy the moment. Two or three of them did not look at me. I wonder why.
This is a scan of a Kodachrome slide. Some of the quality of the original photo has no doubt been lost during scanning. I could have sharpened it more but then it would have become more noisy, so I decided to keep it like this.
Here is a larger version.

Good evening Gert - The group of girls are obviously delighted to be the subject of your interest and I imagine that they are as interested in you as you are in them! I find the adherence to a school unicorn interesting, a hang over from colonial days perhaps? Beautiful open faces and wide smiles, I too hope that they have fared well!

We must be very few from the western world who have been to Daman & Diu !
these young girls around 40 years old by now are maybe the same that I met when I was there and who are now working on the port, either preparing or selling fish
This idea makes me smile. Sweet memories arising with this one
Best regards, have a nice evening

Hello dear Gert,
Here you can see perfectly the influence of the Gt Britain ! I don't think that you can see anywhere else in Asia those uniformed children but in India.
Another perfect capture from your archive. Those kids must be around their late thirties now and mothers !
TFS and best regards from İstanbul

this is a very delightful scene, one that livens and brightens a town's streets, a charming class portrait in action:) I like very much how the flow of pupils is crossing the frame and looks endless. The backdrop is deep and interesting, the lovely little girls and their teachers stand out so naturally and intriguingly as they are passing before your lens. Each little girl is smiling in her own style, even the ones that are not looking towards the camera. The spontaneity, insouciance and innocence of this scene are timeless and touching. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Excellent shot from daily life.
I like frame and colors.

Oh, I have taken girls out, like this, on school trips. I am sure that they would have found you and your camera just as interesting as you found them! They are mostly smiling at you, pleased with the whole experience! I can understand why the ladies are not looking at your camera but I am surprised that they are not looking at the girls in their care.
The girls look smart in their school uniforms, dressed so differently from their teachers. I was intrigued to see that some of the girls are barefooted. I wonder if that is a choice or an economic necessity.
You have the most interesting archive of photographs in a world that is changing so very rapidly.
My warm regards,
COSTANTINO (55534) 2014-03-13 13:52
lovely capture with all those little girls
I liked your notes athat if time has been
good to them they have now made fine careers
for themselves and taken their rightful
places in the vanguard of sociery
this phrase says everything

it is nicely captured scene with the curios glances of the schoolgirls and the teachers trying not to show an interest in the photographer. It is almost an illustration how we loose natural behavior when we approach adulthood caught in convenances and expectations.
I wonder how the same girls would react now seeing you on the street :-)
Lovely picture with all the charm of the old slide.
Thanks for sharing

what a very charming photograph, the smartly dressed girls ,each holding hands, are clearly excited by your presence with a camera whilst the escorting colourfully dressed teachers act with complete disdain.
Such a cheerful shot,it`s delightful.
Kind regards Les.

This is yet another well scanned colour slide from what must be an immense collection that you have. And, being this time from a Kodachrome slide, the quality is definitely better than from your Agfacolor ones.
This picture is, of course, ten or more years younger than your recent ones from Afghanistan but I think it is the place and people rather than the age of the picture which makes it appear a far happier and carefree photograph than those. I didn't see much evidence of people smiling in your Afghan photos but this picture depicts sheer and utter joy - every single one of those young girls is smiling or laughing and they are all looking at you! Even the two teachers, though slightly more serious, appear happy to have their photographs taken and appear content with life.
A delightful photograph which really lifts my spirits! It's well composed too and has lovely colours, lots of interest and action and excellent detail too.

Hello Gert, Nice view of these girls in uniforms. What I like in other countries are the kids school uniforms. Even when the country is very poor the children all in different uniforms looks nice. Specially in India they are often very beautiful and traditional. There was such an idea in Poland too but the parents didn't want it and I do not know why. Then often is a catwalk in school and the children from poorer families feel unhappy.
The girls noticed you and have a lot of fun.

I still have some archive photos prepared to post :).

You're capturing well this snapshot by a good angle and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle along which many cute students are led by the teacher and are walking. They wear a good school uniform, and it's impressive in their smile.
Apurba20 (984) 2014-03-14 0:30
As an Indian, this photo is not surprising, even though it is three decades old. There are two sets of girls, ones in the front who have become used to you and your camera and are either too delighted or a little conscious, and the group at the back who are comprehending your presence.
Nice title. I am a fan of that movie...and your photos too.
wolf38 (31280) 2014-03-14 2:19
Hello Gert. What an original title. Much of the world is changing only gradually. In principle, everything stays the same. The title of the photo could be interpreted in this sense. The comparison between 1985 and today is very interesting in any case.

another nice one from the past. Interesting to see how old are now these little kids now. Anyway, I enjoyed this nicely composed image which is a nice and moody one. Tfs.

Elle ne date pas d'hier. Déjà trente ans et pas trop de rides apparentes. Le scan est réussi et les couleurs ne sont pas trop passées. Je pense bien que l'on pourrait voir la même chose aujourd'hui.

Ah, to be a child again with no other worries except what games to play. Love those happy smiles of innocence. Good lighting and nice details with wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

En fin bild med denna långa rad av flickor. De färgglada lärarna ökar ju ytterligare intresset.
Hälsningar och trevlig helg

Beautiful photo of these school girls with a teacher , that future is today 's past, I hope they have now a happy life and are so happily smiling.
Subhogen (4065) 2014-03-14 11:27
A lovely image which I am seeing with a smile on my face reciprocating the bright smile of the little girls in the picture. Love the way all of them are amusingly looking at your lens while their teachers are trying to be sober. The queue seems to be endless. Like the POV and angle of the shot. A fine DL shot with lots of warmth and charm. Loved seeing it. Thanks for sharing.
photographer_sg (4159) 2014-03-14 13:31
that is such a charming view of the schoolgirls curious and at the same time delighted to have their photograph taken. We can only guess about how their lives progressed and hope that they all grew up to lead normal, healthy lives and became responsible citizens. great depiction of daily life with lovely vibrant colours.
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

Hi Gert, A nice snapshot of these students and the teachers. An memorable moment of you and these people registered on a print paper despite the fading colours. The moment that history can never change. Hope that they all doing fine now. This image definitely worths more than 2 points. Best regards

An educational excursion that children always waiting for and they are also a great cheerful subject photographically as shown but the the teacher's in bright bold colours somehow glues the eye in. It's nicely framed with some interesting bg and excellent clarity. A good technique to make the picture tells a story as these children liven and make the shot, Well done, Congrats
kasianowak (6463) 2014-03-15 4:24
Relatively recent compared to you photos from Afganistan! :)
A lovely insight in everyday life. Interesting contrast between the teachers' traditional clothes and the girls' western style uniforms. Were they being prepared, almost 30 years ago, to future life in globalised world?
Have a nice weekend
carlo62 (32839) 2014-03-15 14:59
è incredibile pensare che queste bambine oggi hanno circa 40 anni...
Sembravano molto felici di vederti e di essere fotografate, tutte molto spensierate nei loro vestiti tutti uguali.
jcpix (13658) 2014-03-15 17:04
Smiles all the way around, and another one from this side of the monitor! :) This is really great, you were definitely wise to take advantage of the passing moment, it's resulted in a wonderfully charming and endearing image. Scan quality is long lost amidst the cheerful and expressive nature of this imagery...and besides, it looks just fine to my eyes...I'm far more interested in the story and overall visual. Hard to not appreciate the enthusiasm and character from this group, and as you stated, hopefully they've all gone on to bigger and better things as time has progressed. Love it Gert! Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Take care.

Awesome natural colors in this old image from the 80s.Very well captured with good lighting. The kids must be in their mid 30s whereas as the ladies must be over 60 by now .Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
PaulVDV (22141) 2014-03-16 4:15
A curious sight with all the girls dressed in uniform while their teachers wear colourful clothes with beautiful patterns.
I don't think these uniforms are a Portuguese heritage but perhaps they profess the catholicism like their former colonisator.
The spontaneous reaction of many girls on your presence is well captured.
Best regards, Paul

Bonjour, cher Gert,
Une photo de 1985 qui n'a pas pris une ride. De plus, le personnage principal en sari est fort bien placé dans la composition.
Félicitations pour tout (numérisation et présentation).

This photo reminds me my Sri Lanka trip. The new school year is beginning on the 2nd January and going on till the end of November. December is holiday and Saturday and Sunday are days off. I see the white man with a camera makes them smile. Very nice and positive report from the past.
Have a great new week!

macjake (56590) 2014-03-17 12:24
i can count 19 or 20 girls here, and like you said most are looking straight at you with large smiles.
interesting to see the girls holding hands and how they almost all have the exact same hairstyle.
fun photo for sure.
see you around

Ah, what a lovely scene with all the girls going to school accomapnied by their teachers. Love how some of them are really happy with your presence and smile brightly for the camera. This really cheers me up.

I imagine you waving them in some funny way, so some smiled back at you
Charming scene pupils in estern uniforms, teacher with saries and all of them with not shoes but simple sandals
Congrats and regards

Hi Gert. As a former teacher I miss those joyful smiles which keep teachers young at heart. Little girls and their bangles, a sweet image and now they probably have girls of their own. You notice that the one in the front who is too demure to look at you has four bangles! Regards. Klaudio.
Tigerlily (3107) 2014-04-17 9:12
I don't know much about the scanning technique, the moment count. I guess the problem is the very light background and the dark skin tone make a strong contrast, it is difficult to handle. I have no idea, I have no experience of scanning. Thanks again, Gert.
mcmtanyel (13493) 2014-04-27 16:20
Almost thirty years ago, if they were about 12 back then, they must be in their forties, the most productive stage in their lives. A very fine slide well preserved and converted to digital with skill.
