Photographer’s Note

Daman. A small federal-administered state on the border of Maharashtra and Gujrat, and almost four hours train ride from Mumbai. Situated at the side of Arabian Sea, it is a very laid-back place where people come mostly to relax over the weekend. Once this place was controlled by Portugese, so influence of Portugese culture and architecture still visible. There is no sea beach per se as it is situated beside a tidal flat. A tidal flat is a long flat ground devoid of loose sands that you find in the beach. During low tide, the sea is over 6-7 kms away, and at high-tide it comes over to the tidal flat.

The photo shows a moment during the high tide. Main livelihood of people in here is fishing. There are several poor people who cannot afford a boat. So at the high tide, when the water flows into inland, it brings fishes too. These people get in such a low stream with nets to catch those fishes.
