Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health (Velankanni Mother Mary Church) is one of the most sacred Christian (Marian) pilgrimage places (in South India). This Panchayat town was declared as a holy town by the Pope as this town thrives with religious activities and faith in Mother Mary. It is situated on the Coromandel (Bay of Bengal) coast and precisely in a panchayat town in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, India.
Legendary stories tell that Mother Mary blessed the place Vailankanni with her appearance while carrying Infant Jesus during the end of the 16th century or in the early periods of 17th century. Like Lourdes in France, thousands of Christian devotees throng to this place all through the year and hence this place is nicknamed as the 'Lourdes of the East' also regarded as Lady of Health, also known as the Madonna of Velankanni. She was renowned among the people for possessing miraculous powers. Representing a Gothic style of architecture, the building of the church is painted white, while the roof is covered with red tiles.
The town Velankanni is 345 Km. away from Chennai and is well connected to other surrounding towns through many means of transport like rail, road and air. Nearest railway station is at Nagapattinam and the nearest airport at Trichianpalli.
