After a brief and unexpected excursion to contemporary Sweden I return to good old india in 1987.
This is a glimpse from the beach at Mahabalipuram (also known as Mamallapuram), a short distance south of Chennai (formerly Madras). Local tourists come to Mahabalipuram mainly to see the many temples and exquisite statues found all over the small town. Some also visit the long sandy beach, but mainly to watch the sea and dip their feet, not usually to go swimming.
Mahabalipuran was one of the places severely hit by the huge tsunami in December 2004. The beach was considerably changed, but the waves also exposed temples that had been covered by sand or water for centuries. I expect to write more about that in a later note.
I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. Here is a larger view.

the surging tide appears to have taken the ladies by surprise as they take a tentative step into the sea, good timing on your part!
Their colourful clothes add so much charm and interest to this imaginatively composed beach scene.

Amusing scene and I remember how I liked the similar scene from 2004 also from Mamallapuram. Excellent composition, it seems the ladies also had a lot of fun. Pity they do not swim, but maybe in sari it would be difficult.
Interesting what you write about tsunami and new temples exposed. I was in India and later in Thailand not long time before tsunami and I often was thinking what happened to the people I met there, did they survived disaster? The people from the village on stilts on the sea near Krabi, I am afraid, they didn't. So many places that I visited were later hit by tsunami or earthquakes. I am always very sad when I think that the people in a place I know have suffered.
I have quite many photos "with people" from my trips, but it seemes to me that in my presentation they are less interesting then landscapes or architecture.
Warm regrads MAlgo

you know what i just realized?
If there was a photo of Me back in 1987 you could TELL its from the 80's because of the style of clothes....
I'm not so sure if that theory stays true for the Indian attire with the Sari or suits they wear...makes me wonder.
fun shot, fun scene, you have some women who are eager to get their feet wet and some who are a little hesitant.
So much for poor Sweden! haha

this is a very attractive picture, it evokes awe and fun:) Your composition is simple but strong and effective, I like very much how the group of girls and their "chaperone" have huddled together to confront the surf and how you have placed them at the corner of the frame with so little space behind them. The motion of the sea is superb, the colours are wonderful. The sky enhances the fascination of the scene and the atmosphere. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

This image made me smile as seeing the ladies wearing colourful saris (not sure that's the correct name; there is this stereotype that all dresses worn in India are saris and those worn in Japan are kimonos etc...) reminded me of all the gear people used to wear to go to the beach in Victorian times in the UK. :-)
I like the way you composed the image with the little crowd placed at the edge of the frame just as they are on the outskirts of the big expanse of the ocean.
Interesting that while the tsunami destroyed some buildings it also revealed some others. Looking forward to hearing more.
Royaldevon (27781) 2014-04-30 11:39
You surprise me with the details of your recollections. The tsunami was a catastrophe; thank goodness there was one good aspect!
The ladies look to be having a wonderful, shared paddling experience! You can see who were the bravest paddlers! Your shot reveals the vastness of the sea; it is overwhelmingly immense!
Another great conversion.
My kind regards,

Happy with going back to India in a creative and good capture of daily live in India, remember watching similar scenes In Mumbay
Here the mix of color of the saris against the green color of the sea is quite eye catching
Like also the differents ways they , the women, enjoy or not, being touched by the water
Well done, regards

A terrific return to the old days (although...to be honest...this picture might just as well have been taken yesterday, might it not?) - great scan quality colours & a fantastic view. Great post!
Good note too, particularly the tsunami reference is a good inclusion there.

First, I thought you'd played a little bit too much with contrasts. Then, I've read your note. I like how you captured the scene, these women playing in the sea, together.
Thanks for sharing,
carlo62 (29651) 2014-04-30 15:27

Hi Gert. I can hear the excited screams and giggles. Waves like these bring out the child in all of us. Lovely POV from the back showing them in a line,as if they are performing a dance. Best wishes. Klaudio.
imageme (1625) 2014-04-30 17:48
Hi Gert, Very high quality image with lovely composition. The women seem enjoying the ocean water a lot. I can hear the sea is howling and the wind is blowing. The formation of the clouds adds to its chilling feelings. Thank for sharing

very nice pov from 1987.like the light contrasts in the bg and the fg.amazing clouds and grey shades.like the body language of the visitors as they seem to be excited and also a little scared.

A very nice scene on the beach and perfect execution, such scenes I have seen in Turkey in the 90s of the 20th century,

An interesting article on the place and time ...

Good work, good memories of 1987.

kato (11630) 2014-04-30 22:50
You're capturing well this beach scene by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see wide ocean and the wave which rolls in to the seashore. The women who have dipped the leg on the seashore seem to live together with the nature of the ocean. And, it's also impressive in traditional clothes.
Kamilutka (8095) 2014-05-01 4:33
I love this scene! The colorful group of the girls playing with the waves has something joyful and charming about it. I guess there is always a bit of child in everyone of us. Nice composition too, with the bright colored corner catching an eye. Well spotted and executed!
serp2000 (38980) 2014-05-01 4:52
Your photo reminds me my old report from Goa: The Bathing of Indian Women
Anyway this is amazing scene for a western eye, but I remeber when the Indian people have took photos of us, we were big exotic in some areas in India.
rigoletto (34231) 2014-05-01 4:59
this one has an epic feel to it, the gathering of people by the shore, waves and dramatic clouds, as if they expect something to happen. don't know how you found this high vantage point, but it looks like a movie scene, taken with a third person objectiveness, watching it from afar, without interfering the event. i like the contrast and color balance too, there is no evidence of irrelevant color cast.
mesutilgim (81578) 2014-05-01 5:14
Hello dear Gert,
Another very nice and educative capture in your gallery. Both photographycally and informative perfect. This is a perfect expression of faith.

Ciao JJ, lovely composition with beautiful people of fantastic sea, splendid light, excellent clarity and wonderful colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Comparing this charming scene with scenes from nowadays, one can truly say that Indians haven't changed much in the way they dress.
I wonder if it was intended to get one's Sari wet in this scene, the women look rather surprised by the incoming wave.
Interesting note about the discovered temples after the tsunami, I would never have thought this disaster to be of any good at all.
jcpix (12738) 2014-05-01 18:34
Safe to say these women are "testing the waters," yeah? :) Even for just a small step into the tide, it appears to have some force behind it, I'm guessing they got a little more than they bargained. A wonderful photo that has a conveyance of motion and even a touch of anxiety. Amazing to think that the natural disaster in 2004 would have revealed hidden treasures...a small silver lining amongst such tragedy.
These women's sari's are quite colorful against the sea greens and cloud filled sky, a lovely collection of nature and life in motion. Enjoy the new day ahead. All the best.
abmdsudi (41422) 2014-05-02 7:52
A good record shot of the day, bright and colourful on a sunny day bringing lots of joy to the beach goers and a nice exploitation as they also give great perspective and depth The wave strengthens the shot nicely, but sincerely, there appear to be slight distractions to the eye caused by the slight over exposure in the clouds as well on the water which I find a bit distracting the overall view. Great capture nevertheless, TFS
batalay (35117) 2014-05-02 9:07
A timeless photo from 27 years ago. It looks just as fresh as a digital photo shot in our times. The closely clustered young women exude a certain collective innocence and enthusiasm, as if wading into the sea for the first time.
Have a good weekend,

good old India in 1987
natural scenery with the traditional

The ocean can be beautiful, inspiring and a friend. But it can also turn deadly very quickly. The 2004 tsunami was a great tragedy for the humans especially those that perish and those directly affected by it. Nice capture of this beautiful scene with good details and wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

This is a superb composition with the line of people dipping their toes into the water. The breaking surf adds dynamism and there is a sense of fun being had by all.
Very well done - a lovely seascape with human interest.
Kind Regards, Ann

the wonderful weather and the ladies enjoying a day on the beach combined with the attractive location convey a feeling of positivity and a carefree mood (despite the Tsunami). A lovely shot reminding us of the best days of summer in our region. Those colourful clothes are a super detail.... colourful and elegant. Thanks for sharing!
adores (35196) 2014-06-14 12:28
I guess we can still see similar scenes nowadays. It's a very good daily scene, with good colours in spite of the age. I really like the movement and textures of the water. The people are very well placed on the corner of the frame.
delpeoples (52871) 2014-08-02 7:04
What a fantastic decisive moment you captured. Full of colour, dynamism and a real sense of timelessness. The sea seems to be coming out to greet them like an old friend. The colours of their costume are really compelling elements of the photo. Your high POV is like the view a seagull flying over would have. Extremely well done.
Enjoy your weekend
