Yanaimalai or Elephant Rock
On top of cycle of power, along the tale, he cuts the granite rock in to small pieces, his skin burned black in the heat of the sun.
Always a dream of me, carving the stone to a scupture of my imagination, he could give ma a helping hand, who knows ?
(Vanessa said to me, show the muscles ... so be it,
an extra for her in the WS ........ )
At the quarry of the Elelphant Rock near Madurai at 17:27, 45°C .

An ordinary daily life shot. Very simple, nothing artistic in it except that it has been taken by Henk.

Extraordinary light and détail. I love the dust in the hair and the sky of this man at work. The shot bring out very well the hard work at sun. Great shot!

Henk: another scripturally sharpened masterpiece from you. Now that you're retired, I suspect we'll get alot more images from Tamil Nadu around here :) regards, c

I can not but wonder at their hard life, under that hard sun, hitting little by little to realize what must be done,to feed his family, hoping for a better life for them.
Through these photos,do we relize how lucky to be wherer we are.
Hoping that the modernization of India will bring them better living conditions while at the same time, not loosing the essantial of life.
A beautiful telling picture Henk

Beautiful portrait picture of this worker. The light that shines on him is fabulous. You cannot ask for a better ambient light.
gibbsy (1358) 2006-11-19 14:22
Striking image. I find my eyes glued to the worker who really stands out against the stone. Excellent human subject.

Très beau portrait de ce tailleur de pierres. La lumière est belle et met bien en valeur la peau du personnage. Peut-être le cadrage est-il fort serré ? En tout cas une belle image. Merci.

Technically not your best photo. But there is no problem: the man and the story behind this scene is much more important.

Nice shot sir you captured him in his natural pose and grey background is making him prominent.
thaprem (2554) 2006-11-20 1:58
A wonderfully framed to bring the best of his moment...
I particullarly liked the muscualr shot...
Very tricky I can see from the amount of light on the original!..
But still very neatly executed.

Hi Henk, wonderful...when i see your images...i can say only...wonderful...

We say "chauffé à blanc" and that is the feeling I have for this situation, there is someting small in the man in the middle of the stones and certainly the idea he will offer a creative work by his attention.
Hard life anyway
sebcz (2345) 2006-11-20 4:51
A great potrait, look at the man's muscles, every ligament is visible.
It must be a hard (like a stone) work.
carper (96) 2006-11-20 10:12
prachtige foto Henk.
Dat noemen ze bij ons een gespierde spijker, heel fraaie foto, goede details en mooie contrast, uitstekend werk. Nog een paar weekje en U zit daar weer.

Very, very expressive and portrait and great compo, using those rocks on the right to enhance the man very nicely. The fact that the sharpness is so good and the hammer is a bit blurred is amazing, as it gives the notion of movement in a very nice way.
Maybe the only possible tiny flaw is the cropped hair.

Quite apart from the beauty and power of your portrait, Henk. I think of what effort it must have taken to reach this place and encounter this man and get to know something of his life. A picture you had to work to get. It puts those lush pictures of tropical beaches into the shade. There is a very real, very raw edge to this kind of photography. It is REAL not phony. That's what you do best, Henk. Regards Kevin

Je note une bonne concentration du sujet sur son oeuvre.
La luminosité environante met bien en valeur cette scène (action).
Je constate surtout une netteté irréprochable.
