On the market in center Madurai, she was selling her tiny crop to passengers ...
I was caught by her face, so much stories chisseld by time.
no crop, as shot.

Wow! Great job here, the colors are amazingly vivid, as is the detail of the woman's skin. Thanks for sharing.
don_narayan (2014) 2005-12-12 18:28
hi Henk. excellent detail in the woman's face, you are right, a lot of stories in those lines. the composition here is excellent as well... with her modest crop surrounding her. great color and saturation, too. nice work.
CaptainJack (0) 2005-12-12 18:53
You've captured her expression wonderfully, and the positioning of her on the side of this image is well done, keeping the location(background) of where she was in relative focus to tell the whole story. The colors of her skin and her clothing are brilliantly taken as well. Thank you for sharing this!

So Mr Jacobs, after all this time carrying your 1DII + all the lenses, do you not find that one arm is very much longer than the other? And, whilst one arm is extremely weak, with the other you are able to lift a bus full of people :-)
Long time that I have not seen one of your pictures (more because they disappear past the first couple of screens so quick). But this I find particularly attractive. As has been pointed out, the detail in the face is great, as it is throughout the rest of the body features. What also works well here is the basket behind the head of the woman - remembering that the eye is attracted first to high contrast, then to brightness and then moves around the image - so, the contrast between the face and the basket helps to draw the eye in to the key elements quickly. We also have a triangular composition here between the basket/face, the green beans and the red of the clothing each of which complement each other and keep the focus within the image frame. Finally, the cage at the top left of the picture fills in what could have been a very empty and unsatifying space.
Makes a nice picture - and also good to see that you have preserved her modesty by cropping the picture at her knees. It would have been indescrete to go any lower ;-)

WOW, don’t know what to say about this picture. This picture is full of small details, from those vegetables to the lines of her face, really, those are telling story. The Red and green contracting colors are excellent. For me the crop is just right as a bit more distance could miss some details of her face, the most attractive part of this picture.

Great colors and details. This picture caught my eyes imediatly.
rakeshgupta (2672) 2005-12-12 21:06
Very good portrait of the old woman. Colours are well enhanced and her facial expressions are captured at right time.

Hi Henk! The lines on her face are so sharp and vivid! I have to say WOW! Very colorful and beautiful photo! I'm looking at it for a long time and still amazed at the quality/clarity! Great work! rgds.
poulinp (4530) 2005-12-12 21:55
Bravo, jolie portrait.
sun_web (665) 2005-12-12 23:17
Very arresting photo and great clarity. You have captured India well through your lens.. Great job Henk!
Gerrit (45745) 2005-12-13 1:25
Bien (4745) 2005-12-13 1:35
Hallo Henk, A truly beautiful shot with a thousand stories to tell! The colours here are absolutely brilliant and her sari contrasts so well with the green vegetables. I like the moment of spontaneity and normality here as well as the woman listens to the one speaking to her. Beautiful work! Sabine
rowanb (864) 2005-12-13 1:44
fantastically detailed and sharp, you can see almost every line on her face! nice d.o.f. too, the colourful background is just right. great work.
yeskarthi (164) 2005-12-13 2:09

Thanks for sharing!

it's a wonderful color show... very good copodition of the daily life...
Amirsun (2122) 2005-12-13 3:08
I like the sharpness in this nice portrait specially in her face, Very good composition Also very good use of DOF to isolate her from the background.
Tanks for posting.
faubry (35405) 2005-12-13 3:58
sathiyan (206) 2005-12-13 4:12
This one is outstanding. I can feel the spirit of the old lady.
This one will be my second favorite of yours. First one is http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/India/photo179862.htm
tinamunk3 (6404) 2005-12-13 4:47
I really really admire the colours in your photos. You write that it is as shot - so you didn't make any ajustments at all?? Is it just your very good camera and lens that does it?? And if you have a few minuts, wont you explain why you write RAW under your camera info. I know that RAW is a way to save an image, but.....? Does it mean that you shoot in RAW and save in RAW...or? I have to learn.
Well, I like this POV to show us this busy talking long-eared wrinkled woman in the middle of her office.
But the colours......unbelievable!!!!
thaprem (2554) 2005-12-13 5:44
Like the way POV brings out what the Paati has in her thought , through her Eyes...
The Wares around her gradually bring back the attention to her eyes like a
slow duet in Tamil movie....
krishindu (469) 2005-12-13 6:23
Another usual shot from the south daily life. But as you said, so much stories are inscribed over there. Great. Can anybody read it for us!
huynt (5079) 2005-12-13 8:51
It is very impressive. Very nice colorful shot. I like it. Thanks. Best regards. Huy
jjcordier (74454) 2005-12-13 10:20
banyanman (7789) 2005-12-13 10:39
Great composition, DOF and sharpness, Henk. This is very much your trademark 'style' of portrait with as much attention being given to the background as to the subject. Lots of detail to see and great saturated colours as usual. Cheers . . . David
carper (96) 2005-12-13 13:30
bullabulla (3488) 2005-12-13 17:59
great scene of the market
This woman is beautiful I love her hand her gaze
the composition and the colors are great
soon you will be there
papagolf21 (83978) 2005-12-14 4:53
flydragon (0) 2005-12-14 8:59
a festival of color here ;o)
and the quality of this pics is amazing
this 24-70 is a jewel
great catch Henk
sorry green later
kensimage (8561) 2005-12-14 10:30
Besides the wonderful storytelling lines in her face, I like all the strong diagonals in this image, Henk--her robe, her arm, and the cage, all roughly parallel. It's a rich, colorful image, both literally and in terms of the story it tells. Regards, Ken.
jhm (136580) 2005-12-14 12:53
john_c (24662) 2005-12-14 14:16
A superb capture of this woman and the expressions which hold thousands of memories. I also like the contrast in both colour and subject represented by the crop gatherings beside her. Your framing and cropping deliver the usual high impact. An enervating shot.
cam (9041) 2005-12-14 23:27
You really frame the lady well, and she has a very expressive face, the better by not looking at the camera.
I like it a lot
Cliffy (590) 2005-12-15 12:40
Another gorgeous shoy from this series Henk, yet again you have really captured the feeling of life in the sub continent. As ever technically superb and really made with those fabulous vibrant colours
Fixfocus (9385) 2005-12-15 14:14
This face tells a interesting story!
A nice daily life moment in amazing colors,
those earring must have been pretty havy..
jmdaoudal (82) 2005-12-15 17:56
ChrisJ (95080) 2005-12-16 3:25
An outstanding portrait & daily life shot. I like the superb color & lighting. Excellent sharpness & texture on the old womans face. Well done!
hdl (6995) 2005-12-16 7:52
Goed weekend!
coco (30439) 2005-12-16 17:38
Very nice moment and daily life here.
Technically is very good, and also is a good portrait.
Only if you see this photo you can now that probably that woman has had a hard and difficult life: her face is very expressive.
keribar (43841) 2005-12-17 2:53
I only agree with you her face is full of untold stories. But the picture is well framed and extremely sharp. This is why I want to add it once again to my favorites.
We'll probably go to Madurai in 2007.
I wish you a very nice week-end - Izzet
