Many of the temples in the Tamil tradition feature open, pillared halls with yalis decorating the exterior columns. The yalis may feature rearing, mythical, leonine creatures, or rearing elephants, or as here in Kanchi, horses. Yes, they all have riders, apparently unmoved by the action, and also, may I call them, hangers-on. I am doubtful of their load-bearing qualities in terms of the roof, but what do I know?

Ken - nice closeup shot of the detail from this Tamil temple. Good light and clarity, though I wonder how much light there was without the flash? I get the sense that more depth and shadow might have been visible had flash not been used here.
