Today 4 people died here at the festival of the Jallikattu in Allanganallur, you could disaprove this kind of festival of the farmers based on a long tradition but you could even more disaprove the danger on the roads here where busses and lorries maintain their daily Jallikattu, yesterday 114 people died in a bus accident near to Melur ....
In spain the bull has no chance, it has to die in the arena, at least here the challence between animal and men stays on a fair level, The one who can catch the bull for a moment gets rewarded with presents as a bicycle, a television, a goat, a chicken, a chair, a bed and money up to 5000 Rps .... but most you get honnered as a winnar !
If the bull can escape without being captured then the prize goes to the owner of the bull.
Being here, it's fun, it's overcrowded, it's sensational but most ... all are in a good mood, a festival mood !

I like this one that follows on from your previous series.. this a nice forward shot, with the action moving towards us. Great colour, energy and focus. Nice note with comparison to other countries and dangers...

Hi Henk. I just love this image, there is much action and excitement... and with this pink dust coming off the bull and all the reactions and emotions. really well done.

Mooie opname. Het opspattende roze en de fanatieke blikken.
Het doet me denken aan de feesten in pamplona waar jonge stieren door de straten rennen.

Purple fury is a great title and your image is fantastic. Wonderful how you catched the movement of the scenery. Great sharpness and wonderful colours.
kensimage (8565) 2006-01-16 11:28
This is impressive, Henk! It's dynamic, with active angles and intense expressions, and with dirt and purple color thrown into the air. You certainly caught the decisive moment! Where were you shooting from, to get such an unobstructed view?
I do have to disapprove of the tradition--it's basically people being bribed by prizes to foolishly risk their lives just for others' entertainment. Of course one could say that some spectacles in the west, like auto racing, amount to the same thing, but our judgment has to be based on whether everything possible is done to maximize safety. That's certainly not the case here.

a perfect sense of motion for me.. and i just saw the date of the photo taken.. it is a fresh one and like your other mostly rated one...
ok.. here are two three lines why i liked it very much..
one. I just want to see the image in a much bigger version may be it can be walled in an exhibition... and for this sense this photograph will be truly amazing.. if u say something dynamic and here it is...
two. often we make a slow shutter speed to show a movement or dynamism in a still photograph just by showing it motion blur... This is just opposite here.. even though everything is stand still here because of the quality of the photograph it just says its own dynamism... and thats kind of a signature shot...
three. Your note tells us some sad thought though, i think this is one way shows a proud Tamil moment of its own culture and a festivity and thats more important to show here... it actually shows how brave they are here even though they do not have a proper process for safety in place... this is just saying , come and look this is life and thats the way we enjoy.. rather we dare to enjoy it.. do you too ??? and thats where this photo becomes a winner for me... Happy Pongal to You...
I am rather not much acting now a days in TE unless an image caught ultimate attention and am feeling an urge to write.. may be too lazy..
sengir (4956) 2006-01-16 12:10
wow, very dynamic shot, it looks as if this bull was just about to leave the screen and run into the viewer. The purple powder gives the shot slightly surreal feel.
lukie (0) 2006-01-16 12:29
een zeer scherpe actie-foto ! Men kan zo de vastberadenheid en verbetenheid van sommige gezichten aflezen. En ook een interessante note. Knap werk !
Drzoana (1122) 2006-01-16 12:35
excellent shot! The movement, action and lots of life and energy - the most difficult things to photograph.
This is an amazing capture.
ALSOM (6616) 2006-01-16 12:36
No need for slower shutter speed, all the faces/looks and attitudes already emphasize the dynanism of the moment ... Lovely pink colors.
saamb (1008) 2006-01-16 13:54
a wonderful shot and useful note. you capture a excellent moment.
AmiBe (6042) 2006-01-16 14:02
great action shot, you can add this one to the decisive moment categorie.
I like all these concentrated faces.
Well composed, fortunately you had a telezoom lens ! ;-)
Good note as well.
Roly (2024) 2006-01-16 14:10
An amazing action shot again, very dynamic, colorful and technically flawless. I still remember your pictures from previous years at the same festival. There is nothing wrong with this kind of entertainment, people are allowed to risk their lives if they want it. I am looking forward to seeing more images from Jallikattu.
michel_r (1118) 2006-01-16 14:11

Well captured, Henk.
I am pasting a news report from the Press Trust of India (PTI).
2 dead, 250 injured in bull-fighting incident
Press Trust of India
Alanganallur (Madurai), January 16, 2006
Two persons were killed and over 250 injured on Monday at Jallikattu, an ancient form of bull-fighting. The event was organised to celebrate Pongal.
Though the police had made elaborate arrangements at the venue, they had a tough time controlling more than one lakh people who had gathered to witness the event.
There were about 300 bulls from different parts of Tamil Nadu at Jallikattu.
It is an event wherein the participant holds onto the hump of the bull for a certain distance and one who travels longest is declared the winner. The prize money or articles carried by the bull is given to him.
Tourists from Japan, USA, the UK, France and Switzerland were accommodated in special galleries. Most of them described what they saw as 'hair raising' and fantastic. It was all the more exciting as the participants did not wear any safety equipment to protect themselves, they said.

hi Henk ,
that's an amazing picture ,and this one reminds me an other great one that you took during this event.

coco (30439) 2006-01-16 18:28
Powerful moment and very well captured.
The composition is very good, as also the light and colours.
Simply magnific and also an interesting note.
Thanks for share.
note: not all the people like bullfights in Spain... I don't like
rowanb (864) 2006-01-16 21:07

arnabchat (7233) 2006-01-17 0:17
oh yes. i heard of this accident on TV.
this is just too good an action shot. superb capture.
Makar Sankranti is celebrated in different ways across the country, Pongal is a part of it.
I took the oportunity of this festival time to take some pics from the river ghaats in Kolkata.

I was eagerly waiting to see this photo of yours. Full of action. Mix of all emotions and expressions. I like the angle in which you have taken this photograph. TFS.

Nothing for me to say here, just few lines...
- The Selective DOF & the Point of Focus is Absolutely thrilling & amazingly done..
- The Shutter spped is absolute take away to have caught the action right into your Camera & hence into our eyes & heart!..
Thank you henk for such an brilliant effort in sculpting this life shot in your camera!.
Amirsun (2122) 2006-01-17 2:41
What a strange festival! I'm sorry for those 4 people.
This is a great shot you took in the great moment! Excellent use of shutter speed to freez people and bull. I like the different faces looking agitate to this scene.
Tanks for posting.
yeskarthi (164) 2006-01-17 3:24
Perfect 10 in all aspects. Heartiest Pongal Wishes.
Do I admire the braveness of the youth who take kalai by its horns or you the one with camera in front of it?
sathiyan (206) 2006-01-17 3:43

physel (81) 2006-01-17 9:22
First here is my heartfelt thanks for your Indian (Especially from the state of Tamilnadu) pictures as it is ur camera that truely opened its eye to the real life of India. I saw a lot of Indian pictures here and most of them trying to capture the geographical and epic beauties of my motherland (Including my own photos, I admit) These days I m closely following all your photographs here in TrekEarth and undoubtedly I can say that u r doing your work with ur heart rathen than ur Camera. Hat off for my country Dear Henk!
And for this foto, why you are much interested in this mad game? Indeed, it’s an ideal plot for action photography, this is really insane. The latest news from Tamilnadu is that two persons died in this Jellykettu yesterday. Im from the state of Kerala, the neighboring one of Tamilnadu and I expect to see the life there too through your Canon EOS ID Mark II.
pilpel-adom (3018) 2006-01-18 19:24
After so much time, it is good to see you pictures from far India, Henk!
And thats a marvelous action shot you got here! Amazingly, or not, everything stops - the cow that runs away, the men that do their best to capture it, and the astonished and thrilled crowd, looking to see whose the winner at the end of this match...
sebautourdumond (3108) 2006-01-20 15:20
Very colourful shot and fantastic composition of decisive moment. I love it
Emile (20352) 2006-01-22 18:21
This is one of the best I have seen in TE. This is a number one picture. It's an excellent action shot. Great colours contrast and composition. The sharpness is amazing.
Very well captured.
banyanman (7789) 2006-01-25 8:23
What a fabulous action shot, Henk. Your framing is spot on, as is your focus and DOF using this long lens. The fluourescent dust coming off the back of the bull gives this an almost surreal quality. It's one of the best I have seen on TE for a while, and your note is excellent. Cheers . . . David
Jeppe (18654) 2006-01-30 14:18
Hi Henk - Never seen this before - Ok may a Switch commercial for chocolate ;-)
You captured this action shot at the very best moment with a cloud of purple dust in the air - thanks for sharing - my compliment.
Clairedelune (4923) 2006-02-07 10:30
This is soooooo good! We feel the movement, we feel the effort in the face of the participants, we are almost afraid of the bull that seems to come towards us! 1/500 sec is a very good choice of exposure time! I like how the hands are all extended. I do have reservation about that kind of activity though. But who am I to judge? I simply can't.
s10001in (0) 2006-06-13 4:16
I often go through your gallary ( I really want to take snaps like you & many times currently I stared thinking to come back to India)
Well, This is great shot full with action.
Just feel that may that bullouck will come out of screen.
Great expressions & poses.
a puff of pink powder (Gulal) in well prominent.
Very well done.
erdna (5711) 2006-08-09 11:29
This one is just as good as the second picture! i can see the excitement on the faces of the men. Wonderful shot!
