Madu Festival at Allanganallur follows Poongal, the festival of the harvest.
The harvest is not possible without the use of bulls, so they are celebrated here in challenge with the farmers ... who can catch the bull ?

Well captured photograph, Anand.
I am pasting the news report from Press Trust of India (PTI).
2 dead, 250 injured in bull-fighting incident
Press Trust of India
Alanganallur (Madurai), January 16, 2006
Two persons were killed and over 250 injured on Monday at Jallikattu, an ancient form of bull-fighting. The event was organised to celebrate Pongal.
Though the police had made elaborate arrangements at the venue, they had a tough time controlling more than one lakh people who had gathered to witness the event.
There were about 300 bulls from different parts of Tamil Nadu at Jallikattu.
It is an event wherein the participant holds onto the hump of the bull for a certain distance and one who travels longest is declared the winner. The prize money or articles carried by the bull is given to him.
Tourists from Japan, USA, the UK, France and Switzerland were accommodated in special galleries. Most of them described what they saw as 'hair raising' and fantastic. It was all the more exciting as the participants did not wear any safety equipment to protect themselves, they said.

excellent timing. It is so amazing a picture. And inspite of the tension and movement visible in the entire picture there is very little blurring. keep it up.

A great action image. You have taken it very well too. Enviable sharpness for an image of this kind. The composition has also turned out to be near perfect. Quite expertly done.

This is testosterone gone mad!
All that red-blooded male enegry flying around...just love it!
I never see any women in these pictures...I realise that they do not take part (in their saris and all!), but do they observe along the sidelines at least?
prumod (8300) 2007-04-15 13:05

This is an astonishing action shot, with superb composition, colors and resolution. Although you posted it three years ago, I just came by it in the random order in which you selected the photos on your Intro page.

Very expressive frame and a decisive moment of capture.. the rage in the bull's eye is indicative of the unfolding drama. The question: what happened next?
