Show jumping is a relatively new equestrian sport. Until the Enclosure Acts which came into force in England in the eighteenth century there had been little need for horses to routinely jump fences.(Wikipedia)

Maybe the English were inspiring themself on the God Ayanaar with the parundu on the horse head, protecting the village on the way to Alagar Kovil.
