Fisherman at Work Photo

Photographer’s Note

Here is a shot of Varkala Beach, Kerala, South India. I noticed early in the morning that the fisherman would all be doing a tug of war type fishing method with these long ropes, and constantly switch who was at the front by running around to the back and cycling through the line of workers.
So on my last morning in the seaside town I thought id bring the camera out - i remember setting my alarm to make sure I wouldnt miss the noisy spectacle!

Hello David. I like the shot, teeming with life as it is. The colours are rich and you handled the light and shade well with the patterned metering. The shot is rather small in size at 101k and I think you would have gained a sharper image with less compression. There is also a very, very slight tilt to the right which most people wouldn't mind, but I think in this case where you have such a long section of it as horizon, it is just a little distracting. But on the whole it is a very nice photo.

I wouldn't want to be on the other side of the rope, in a tug of war with these guys. This is a good work David.A photo journalistic view and I liked the way you captured the milling and tugging fishermen, coconut trees, the cliff and the morning warmth. This is well done David. Wished I had taken this though.

This place is one of the best in South-India, and it's not that known. You composed it OK, with the cliff, on the right side. A beautiful light producing strong contrasts too.

Very good daily scene with all these fishermen on the beach. I'm glad you included those people at the top with their bikes also. These colours are great!
