Photographer’s Note

The Chinese fishing nets along the Arabian sea in the town of Kochi I loved and found them very photogenic. They were first errected between 1350 and 1450, and were introduced by traders from the court of Kubblai Khan. They work on a cantelevered system of counterweights, it takes at least four men to opereate them and they are mainly used at high tide.
I was speaking to one of the fishermen who works on the nets and he was telling me that sometimes there is too much of the water hyacinth weed at low tide which you can see here to lower the nets which becomes a problem, this weed washes in from the backwaters.
Many people gather here on the beach at sunset to see and photograph the nets, I got several shots of them in the sunset and this was looking the other way away from the sunset, I liked this light too.
There are so many crows too sitting on the nets and beach and there noise I found adds to the atmosphere.
