Kappad beach, about 16 Kms from Calicut (aka Kozhikode) in Kerala is famous as the spot where Vasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese navigator, landed with 170 men in 3 vessels in late May 1498, finally succeeding in Europe's quest for discovering a sea-route to India. A solitary pillar commemorates the event with the inscription, "Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498".
