Photographer's Note

The mausoleum was erected in the Indo-Islamic tradition with only a suggestion of French flair. I had walked around to the south and the eastern corner. I thought the light better, and there were fewer tourists and schoolchildren about. Tipu Sultan had four wives. By these four wives he had 16 sons, and it is believed 8 daughters. Can you imagine all of the weddings? :-)

On the terrace, there seems to be an unlimited number of tombs, possibly housing the remains of his family. The mosque to the west provides a background for the central structure. While Tipu was a Muslim, the majority of his subjects were Hindus.
