Photographer's Note

Ama kendilerine has dillerini, kültürlerini koruyarak yaşamlarını sürdürüyorlar.

The photo is from our tour to South India, by the Deccan Express last February. The tour was aiming to visit mainly seven Unesco world Heritage sites including the Gol Gumbaz Mauseloum, the Chatrapati Schivaci Train Station and so on. More than this, it was a tour to understand or to get introduced to the rich cultural structure of South India formed by multi linguistics, multi religions and various peoples and tribes. The women at the photo belong to a tribe called Lambadis who are originally from the Banjara tribes of Rajasthan, but then moved South centuries ago for trade and agriculture.Much about their history is not known as they only have a spoken language. Though they speak in a Lambada dialect (which is a combination of Sanskrit, Rajasthani and Gujarathi), many of them have also learnt to speak the languages predominantly used in their respective areas of settlement. Despite this, they have managed to preserve their own language, cultural identity and social structure such that it is identical across the various states they have settled in.
