Photographer's Note

Likai, a beautiful Khasi woman, mother of a cute baby girl, worked as a porter who carried iron to Sylhet. After death of her husband, she remarried. The new husband did not like the child. He believed, Likai loved the baby more than she loved him. He was so jealous that one day, when Likai was out on her work, he killed the child…cut the small body into pieces and cooked the flesh. The head and bones were hidden but he forgot the fingers.
When Likai returned from work, she was offered the meat as lunch. She inquired about the child and her husband told her that the baby was with the neighbours.
Hours gone by, the child did not return, and Likai discovered the small fingers in a betel-nut basket….
…Horrified… she realized what had happened.
A wretched mother, a betrayed wife - mad with desperation and fury, started running towards the edge of the cliff screaming in dismay and horror…
… jumped off.

This is the legend of Nohkalikai Falls.
In Khasi language, ‘Noh’ means leap and ‘Ka’ is feminine gender.
The name of this falls is Noh-Ka-Likai or leap of Likai.

Nohkalikai Falls is a few km away from Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. Falling from a height of 1,100 ft., this is the fourth highest waterfall in the world.

I knew the story. When I shot this, it was a sunny morning. I wanted to shoot the falls in the evening, when Likai leaped off the hill.
The evening shot is in WS.
