Photographer's Note

This is the view of Mount Kangchenjunga the 3rd highest mountain in the world along with her subordinate peaks from a clearing in the Varsey (Barsey) Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim. The building in the FG is the Forest department Log Hut in Varsey. It is one of the 2 arrangements in Varsey where one can spend a night the other being a private guest house. There is no motorable road to this place..one has to trek 4.5 kms from Hilley or Okhrey through dense jungle full of Himalayan black bears, leopards and wild boars to reach this place. The trek although is not very difficult, bear attacks during the time of spring and summer poses a serious threat as they are hungry and are actively looking for food after their long winter hibernation. During April the whole forest is colored bright red and orange as the rhododendrons bloom. Sadly I had gone there in February.

I did not get a chance to stay in Varsey as the hotels were closed due to off season. I stayed in Hilley and wanted to catch the sun rise in Varsey at 5.30 am. I planned to leave at 3.30 am accordingly but my local guide chickened out and did not want to enter the jungle during hours of darkness. So this is the best I could get.

The mountains on the ridge from Left to Right..
Mt. Janoo aka Mt Kumbhakarna (7710m)
Mt. Rathong (6679m)
Mt. Kabru South (7317m)
Mt. Kabru North (7338m)
Mt. Kangchenjunga shrouded in a cloud (8585m)
Mt. Pandim (6691m)
and Mt. Siniolchu (6888m)

Thanks for visiting.
