Likai, a beautiful Khasi woman, mother of a cute baby girl, worked as a porter who carried iron to Sylhet. After death of her husband, she remarried. The new husband did not like the child. He believed, Likai loved the baby more than she loved him. He was so jealous that one day, when Likai was out on her work, he killed the child…cut the small body into pieces and cooked the flesh. The head and bones were hidden but he forgot the fingers.
When Likai returned from work, she was offered the meat as lunch. She inquired about the child and her husband told her that the baby was with the neighbours.
Hours gone by, the child did not return, and Likai discovered the small fingers in a betel-nut basket….
…Horrified… she realized what had happened.
A wretched mother, a betrayed wife - mad with desperation and fury, started running towards the edge of the cliff screaming in dismay and horror…
… jumped off.
This is the legend of Nohkalikai Falls.
In Khasi language, ‘Noh’ means leap and ‘Ka’ is feminine gender.
The name of this falls is Noh-Ka-Likai or leap of Likai.
Nohkalikai Falls is a few km away from Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. Falling from a height of 1,100 ft., this is the fourth highest waterfall in the world.
I knew the story. When I shot this, it was a sunny morning. I wanted to shoot the falls in the evening, when Likai leaped off the hill.
The evening shot is in WS.

What a spectacular aerial view and what an awesome POV, detailing the rock face and the steepness of the drop. It seems Yann-Arthus Bertrand has a strong competitor ! Superb capture of this natural wonder. I like the sunlight shining right at the bottom of the fall. The green of the trees and the brown of the rock is a lovely combination of colour, too. Focus and exposure are well managed and the excellent DOF gives a real sense of the scene. A very impressive image. Well done.

your birds eye view shows perfectly the dramatic nature of the falls and the surrounding environment, with the contrast between the sunlit areas and shadows adding extra dimensions to a nice clear shot.

A breath taking and overwhelmingly special as you stand above watching the falling water deep below and I can appreciate this aerial shot much better after reading your narratives, the pov you choose for this one enhancing the height and depth of this magnificent falls with its rich colours, light and details are superb.
The way water is captured so sharp and with a great sense of movement, at the same it gives an idea of the scale of it. You are blessed by the sheer beauty and grandeur of this place. The treatment works very well. A graceful shot! Congrast, TFS
P/S Ws photo: You did your best there although the result is not what you would have expected.

Lovely shot of this waterfall.
It looks so dramatic against this magnificent curved cliff face. I simply love the shadow and light patterns on the forest, specially light on the feet of the fall.

Such a glorious picture of natures beauty and such a contrast to the story in your note, it is amazing to stand at places like this and know a story like that, it is so, so high... I love the water falls with the light into the pool at the bottom, the sense of scale here is amazing. Excellent TE post Alekhya, thanks for sharing.
All the best

So pathetic story, and your photo nicely convey the mood of the story. The soft light added a lot to it. The water line is looking like the cry of that helpless mother. Thanks for sharing this story and thanks for sharing this beautiful photograph. Tfs.
Happy New Year.

I never visit that place yet Alekhya, I hope I'll not go there alone! I know that famous story belonging to North east India folks of course and without reading the photo note, it's well explained, the highest waterfalls in the country and one of the most rainy area of the world (13 000mm/year). The lake formed by the huge cascade is emerald color.., various hues of green there, a remarkable picture I'll not forget!

This entry is the perfect example of what a TE entry should be: A technically competent (yours is more than competent, it is gorgeous) photo with a good narrative to explain the photo. You earn an A+ on both counts, congratulations & TFS!

great teh panoramic view of the waterfall as crossing the dense forest and foliage fall and creates the small lake below.
Excellent presentation from this advatange POV.

Ciao e buona serata

Very nice birds eye view of a waterfall, fantastic rocks, excellent depth and sharpness, interesting legend
holmertz (48856) 2014-01-06 2:25
It's a horrible story you tell us but the view is great. The waterfall may not be among the biggest in the world but it is certainly very high and spectacular. The lttle pond has a marvellously intense blue tone contrasting stunningly with the brown and green surroundings.
nikkitta (17066) 2014-01-06 9:59
How very interesting dramatic legend to introduce the capture, now we can fully appreciate the landscape from a well chosen POV
Impresive contrast and lots of shades of green in the vegetation
The sun just adds some special light at the failing waters
Beutiful capture, congrats
WS:At the evening it was really dark

Impressive landscape... Wonderful view, good illustration of your note, I have to say people like to create some legends around every stone, hill or waterfall, no doubt. Why not? I like some interesting stories too ;))
Best wishes from Russia!

Incredible place and pov! I really like the sunlight on the water at the bottom. Great colours! I really like your note and the legend about the place!
kiks (11785) 2014-01-27 7:37
Amazing ladchape with the plunging water falling in that 'little'lake between all the green. What a view! But what an awfull legend.
There is a bit of to much 'white'at the left side in my opinion and there for the colors get a bit lost. I did a WS on it to correct it. Hope you don't mind.
PaulVDV (26622) 2014-01-30 12:34
Absolutely a breathtaking view!
It looks like you took this picture from in a plane or in a helicopter.
I like the colours of the lake and the crashing water surrounded by the red rocks and a little further off by the densely forested area.
Best regards, Paul
