Pictured here is the statue of Lord Buddha inside the Hemis monastery in Ladakh, 45 kms. away from the capital city of Leh.
The Hemis monastic complex is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir within the Ladakh region of the Western Himalayas, at an altitude of 14,000 feet making it one of the highest settlements of the world. Hemis gompa is believed to have been established in 1630 by Lama Tagstang Raspa and built by Palden Sara under the patronage of King Sengge Namgyal on a site previously sanctified by the construction of a cave hermitage dating from the 12th century. It belongs to the Drukpa lineage of Buddhism or the 'Red Hat' sect.
The huge rectangular courtyard of the monastery plays host to the spectacular 2 day long Hemis festival held once in a year in honour of Guru Rinpoche.
The highlight of the Hemis Festival is the Masked Dance, performed by the lamas, that illustrates good prevailing over evil. The performers wear elaborate and bizarre costumes and brightly painted masks. These masks are the most vital part of the dance. The dance movements are slow, and the expressions grotesque. The music is characteristically punctuated with sounds of cymbals, drums, and unwieldy trumpets.
Each colorful mask depicts a different figure in the legend that's being portrayed. The Padmasambhava dance, which shows the conquest of the ruta demons, includes Yama -- the God of death, and the black-hatted sorcerer, Guru Trakpo -- the vanquisher of all demons.
I missed this photogenic festival by a few months so had to do with this.
Thanks for visiting.

Hello Subho ,
your excellent note is complemented by this fascinating photograph.
Despite the less than perfect lighting you have captured the scene very well revealing the stunning colours and intricate details perfectly.Beautifully done.
Kind regards Les.

The lighting was certainly not easy, but you have managed it reasonably well. I like the point of view and symmetrical framing; also, the saturated colours which are very apposite to the subject.

Very good composition, inside this temple, although it was a little difficult to manage the light, that ray of sun coming to the foot of the pedestal, magnificent sculpture of Buddha, in a grandiose setting, where wood on the protagonists, very well crafted and colored.
As usual, great sharpness and brightness.
Have a good day.
All the best.

The monastery is framing well the statue. The point of view is showing the détails and the colour the Lord Buddha statue. The surrounding light is making the colours to stand out. Have a nice day.

The light was a bit challenging in this photo but the colors are lovely and the framing is just right.

It's an excellent attempt no doubt, as the saying goes, practice makes perfect and you have tried your very best here. The drawback is obvious with shooting high intensity of sun ray, is totally BURNT OUT that you get, distracting attention from the other more interesting areas of the image. It's always a problem and you have to watch the exposure levels when including it as it can become too strong and invade an image. Timing is often the best option, choosing a time when the sun's strength gives the colour, but is not GLARING. I don't mean to be unkind, it is just my sincere opinions. Hope this is of help to you. Congrats

hello Subho, it is a superb monastery indeed. The interior with Lord Buddha idol is looking gorgeous. You framed it nicely with the incoming light. Excellent composition. Tfs.
PS- You can under exposed it a bit. A bit darker interior often creates more dramatic atmosphere.

Quite interesting note to present the interior view of the monasterie as usually plenty of red color
Like the effect produces by the ray of sun, the impresive Bouddha statue and the ambiance
Who is on the portrait at the right?
Very well done, regards

You have made a good attempt here, choosing an excellent low angle viewpoint for this photo. The view up is really very good and the square composition works well here. The interior itself is very well-exposed (except the bright from the window). Asymmetrical arrangement is a very good choice.
adidas5nb (5743) 2014-02-06 21:31
lovely presentation from this historic monastery.like the pov and the angle.great architecture and interiors.
RhodieIke (11744) 2014-02-06 22:24
You had very strong light pouring in from the left window and I can see why you were capturing the moment of this beautiful statue of Lord Buddha in his glory.
Great mood and strong colours.
Have a good day,

Namaskar dear Subho
A great title, very poetic and very appropriate for a temple such as this, where many hopes and dreams are prayed for. I lie the predominance of the warm colours, the traditional architecture and of course the ray of light. One wonders whether the architects planned it this way, so that light would fall in this divine way.
Excellent work, thanks for sharing
mesutilgim (95854) 2014-02-10 7:01
Very nice interior capture of this budhist temple.
Good layout and of course perfect light management.
The strong light beams from left increases the visual effect.
Many interesting notes makes your entry a perfect TE job.
TFS and best regards

For some strange reason I am unable to remember this statue in Hemis...I remember Rinpoche's famous statue but not this one...
The exposure was difficult with strong light streaming from the roof and couple with the dark interiors its indeed a exposure nightmare...that's where taking picture in RAW mode can be of some help
A nice symmetrical picture with good amount of details!
ourania (47910) 2014-02-13 9:46
the festival described in your note sounds exciting, it's so intriguing to visualize the scenes you cited while observing the still, symmetrical and suggestive setting in your photo. The interior of the monastery is very attractive and interesting, the light gets inside from a superb angle, the diagonal route and its intensity offer so much vividness. I also like the rich, warm colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
