This shot was taken at a Souvenir Shop in Chatta Chowk Bazaar inside the Red Fort,Old Delhi. This is a historical bazaar dating back to the Mughal Period, when the ladies from the Royal Family used to do shopping in the Bazaar.
Some tidbits about the Chatta Chowk Bazaar.
The famous Chatta Chowk (covered market),was built by Shah Jahan, inside the confines of the Red Fort in Delhi. As Shah Jahan decided to build the Red Fort (1638-48) in Delhi, he wanted to have all the amenities, especially for the 100s of members of the Mughal harem, although the Emperor himself had only three wives, including the Lady of the Taj – Empress Mumtaz Mahal. One of the favourite pastimes of women is shopping. But the Mughal women of rank seldom ventured outside, and usually shopkeepers came to the palace to display the wares. But then, the fun of bargaining and the sharing gossip with their friends was lost.
Shah Jahan knew this weakness of his harem and found that in Persian fortresses like that of Isfahan, there were bazaars, known better as covered markets, to cater to the ladies and the nobles of the regime. Usually, the ‘Ladies Day’ was restricted to one day in a week, as it was taboo to have male shopkeepers around when the women shopped.
Also, a lot of precautions needed to be taken, like having the wives of shopkeepers to welcome them and show them the display, as you cannot have them wearing veils while buying the items. Shah Jahan himself had seen one such market inside the Mughal fort at Peshawar.
Bazaars, in 17th century India, were normally in the open air. A covered bazaar, although of a design common to West Asia, was an innovation in India. He instructed Mukarmat Khan, who was supervising the construction of the Red Fort, to build a similar covered market there. When it was completed, Shah Jahan was greatly impressed, as its design was suitable for the hot climate of Delhi.

A nice tightly framed shot of the religious paraphernalia with Ganesh and Buddha clearly visible. Good sharpness and the golden hues are nice. I also like the repetition of patterns and shapes. Tfs!

Colourful shot and typical of so many shops in India in some ways. It brought back memories of shops I visited in Goa, thought they tended to be full of silver jewelery.

una foto simpatica, bella e soprattutto ricca di colore, una testimonianza dei souvenir in voga nella città di Delhi.
Ottima luce e buona nitidezza concorrono alla validità della foto.
Ciao e buona giornata

A very interesting note to accompany this well presented image. The image is judiciously cropped making good use of the bangles as an unusual and apt frame. I like the warm colours and excellent detail to be seen.

This is an excellent presentation of this souvenir stand. The tight framing gives a good sense of the abundance of articles. Good light, colors and sharpness.
jcpix (13908) 2013-05-13 16:17
Quite a bit to take in here, the many colors and souvenirs in this tight framing are almost overwhelming. :) I always enjoy being able to see and get a sense for the local flavor of a city or region, it's so much different than anything I'm accustomed to in my surroundings. Nice detail and sharpness throughout, and I like how you've taken up a lower point of view to be just above the table top. Thanks for sharing a look inside the bazar. Have a great day.

This is a very interesting post as usual, with an informative note and a colourful picture.
I recognise the goods and layouts of a bazaar stall, but this looks very luxurious, with the gold and very ornate goods.
Thanks for sharing.

This is an interesting souvenir shop, so we can see a variety of small Buddha statue sculpture and the mask of a variegated expression. It is likely to take time to choose and buy a pleasing article out of this. The whole is balanced well by a good/bright color combination.
jemaflor (95355) 2013-05-18 8:22
