Pictured here is a strange and almost inhuman mode of transport to cover the 14 km long trekking route that existed between Kedarnath ( A holy pilgrim town dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Gaurikund which is the last stop for the motorable road on this stretch. In local language it is known as 'KANDI' where the 4 people carry the aged and weak on a wooden structure up this steep trekking route so that they can gain their share of piety. Gaurikund is situated at a height of around 1900 meters and Kedarnath at around 3600 meters ASL. You can well imagine the steepness of the trekking route with 1700 meters of altitude gained in just 14 kms. They used to charge around Rs 4000 (around $75) for a to and fro journey.
The ‘YATRA’ or the pilgrimage takes place for around six months in a year from May till the 1st week of November. Rest of the year the whole area remains inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
However inhuman it may seem this was a good source of income for poor people of the mountains. Why it has stopped? The catastrophic Himalayan flash flood of 2013 has washed away a major portion of this trekking route. Towns like Gaurikund and many other small villages on the route have been permanently wiped away from the map. With that these poor people have lost their source of seasonal livelihood. They wait for the new route to be chalked out to reach Kedarnath and the 'YATRA' to begin once again.
Thanks for looking.

thank you for this informative note and picture which a great illustration for it. You captured very well the effort the four men are making and the expression on woman's face is quite priceless too. The landscape surrounding this group of people gives us the idea of how hard this work had to be.
Well given colors and sharpness.
Enjoy your day and TFS!

We can feel the pain the four men have by carrying this woman, but it's their only way to earn some money, and the surrounding landscape shows us what they have to do for the next hour.

Splendid photo, wonderful note, such a shame the local people have lost this income.

Hilly terrain transporting system, well taken photo, Subho.
Face expression of the young carry the old lady, showing the extra effort taken a toll on them.
You were on the right time and spot to capture this vibrant scene.

whilst no one appears to be happy with the situation it`s a very fine daily life shot that shows the labours that were needed to can gain a living.
Hopefully their situation will soon recover.
Very fine photography.

i see what you mean about almost inhuman, this looks like an immense struggle. But I have say, how noble of these men to endure that in order to help those who cannot make the journey so they too may take part. In too many places in the world, people are too selfish to ever consider doing this, and would leave the elderly to fend for themselves, so this is a touching and very important image.
Thanks for sharing another unique vision of the world.

an emotive and wonderful study this. It certainly makes the viewer think and you have captured the intensity and labour involved here superbly. A unique and original image for us all to contemplate over. Well done - powerful imagery!

First thank to the note to understand the meaning of the scene
You managed to show both, the efford of the men as well as the disturbed regard of the woman
Must be hard work but a source of income, hope the new path will be easier to go
Good to have a glimse at the back of the road and the landscape

This is a very precious photo. It depicts a tradition that has been interrupted by a natural disaster, so you're preserving history with it. It informs us of the culture of the region and the natural disaster that we may have missed, again preserving history. For those two reasons alone, I would have given it full marks. But on top of that it is a colorful photo executed with skill. Very nicely done!
PaulVDV (27900) 2014-02-19 8:25
It's obviously a very difficult task to carry a person so many kilometers over such a terrain but it gives a unique opportunity to the elderly and the weak to complete their pilgrimage anyway.
The severity of the journey can be judged by the faces of the porters.
I hope that a new road can be built soon.
Best regards, Paul

I saw this kind of transport at a pilgrimage mountain in Gujarat, where the 9.999 steps to the summit were too many for some elderly visitors. I decided to use my own feet. It's a spectacular photo of a kind rarely seen here and a great contribution to TE. The colours and sharpness are excellent and the surroundings are very impressive.
rychem (34101) 2014-02-19 9:33
A hard job to carry a person such a long way, unusual scene to me, very well captured and presented
adramad (44390) 2014-02-19 10:19
A gorgeous note, which served us well for data of the place, and what the image means.
It is a stunning composition, showing a scene that I think happens in many places .... in one of my trips to India, to climb the temple Gommateshvara in Sravana Belgola population, these carriers also existed, to bring people greater or with walking difficulties, so the image is familiar.
Sensational perspective, with the zigzag path through the upper slopes.
Great management of light and sharpness.
Enjoy a nice day.
All the best.

You relate and show us such interesting details from India. This type of transport was once common in the U.K. but only for the rich and happened many hundreds of years ago. Here, it is quite different, the pole bearers are carrying the old and the weak, not the rich!
It is a great journalistic shot. You use fine leads and excellent details, so there is no doubt about the effort and discomfort of the carriers. I'm not sure about the mood of the old lady, maybe she is unhappy at being photographed!
Your extended details supply the context of steep terrain and uneven paths. They deserve their share piety!
My warm regards,

this is an amazing capture of this extraordinary scene. I can't imagine how hard it is to carry a person such a long way. Wonderfully captured and fantastic executed image. Perfectly well done. I really like it and thanks for your wonderful information note. Awesome !

This is a great scene and spectacular daily life capture. Somehow, the scene just says it all. The close in view shows us the effort on the faces, while we are still far enough back to be able to appreciate the heavy load they are carrying. I really like the way you were able to get the porters in the scene without losing the view of the BG mountains. A great documentary shot.
pierrefonds (64906) 2014-02-19 18:30
You have captured well the action of the men carrying the woman in a special chair. The length of thr path is giving depth to the composition. The light has a good effect on the colours. Have a nice day.

Magnificent pic, with emotions galore.
By all accounts, this road may not be there today. Maybe, so too with the men. Chilling, isn't it? (heard that Ramwada is entirely wiped out)

Ciao e buona serata

What a telling image, and a note which describes in detail the hardships and labor conveyed in this presentation. A picture that certainly evokes emotion from both aspects of text and visual. The individual expressions from each person featured here is compelling, and the slight regard toward your camera from the woman being carried makes an immediate connection with the viewer. A superb documentary type of shot, and a well received entry to fulfill the TE goal. Thanks for providing this insiders look. Enjoy the day ahead. All the best.
annjackman (21813) 2014-02-22 7:59
Your note explains very well the reason for this mode of transport. The men look exhausted and I can understand why. The group are shown in the wider context of the mountainous terrain which really adds to the interest. A super shot.
Kind Regards, Ann

Intéressante note, la fatigue se lit sur le visage des 4 personnes, un dur travail qui aide les personnes âgées et pour eux leurs gagne pains, un dur travail sur ce sol difficile

Namaskar dear Subho
A fascinating piece of your culture and tradition. I am sad to hear that these poor people are doing it so hard. I like your POV, the excellent angle you took this on and the dirty look the lady is giving you. Now that made me smile :)

A powerful image of life in the mountains away from the comfort of urban civilization. You captured very well the range of emotions evoked here by your subjects. A wonderful photo worth to be cherished depicting that "one will never walk alone". Nice capture!
ourania (43696) 2014-02-27 11:59
a very interesting action scene from daily life in the mountain that hosts the pilgrim town. You captured the scene with amazing dynamism and sharpness, the people's postures and expressions are so intriguing and eloquent, there's a strong story in this fleeting scene. The group is excellently positioned in a comprehensible and attractive setting. You managed light, movement and colours superbly. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,

Excellent picture showing the Nepalese labour taking the old lady towards Kedarnath. I visited Kedarnath in 2005. Really a heaven with lots of waterfall during the way from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. Unfortunately the disaster may have vanished many of them. I notied all the 4 labour uplift their foot together in a lyrics. Thanks for sharing.

That's a really heavy work, I saw something similar in Palitana, Gujarat. It's impressive and makes us think. It's hard for them if we pay them to do the work and it's also hard if we don't, because they need the money - it's always a hard decision. You captured their faces and effort very well. A very good composition!
