As used in many parts of Northern South Asia, the term GHAT refers to a series of steps leading down to a body of water, particularly a holy river.
Gola ghat is one og many ghats in varanasi.here a dhobi( The word Dhobi is derived from the Hindi word dhona, which means to wash Dhobis were the forerunnerson the Indian subcontinent to modern professional dry cleaners. Since the dhobi charges are much less than those a dry cleaners, they are popular with mos households.) is seen washing clothes very early in the morning.

Wonderful scene it is of the Varanasi Ghat. Very well chosen pov. The steps have been nicely used to create a graphical effect. The bridge at the far end is superb in morning glow. And the dhobi is of course the main attraction with the spray of water.

Is that the bridge which we have to cross if we go from howrah?
Regarding this photo you certainly achieved a strong exposure, the light on stairs is so mild and it has been caught very carefully. The moment has been freezed and the water droplets fountaining from the cloth is nicely taken, the distraction of water against the staticly looked aother portions tends to its originality.
A nice "Dhobi-Ghat" Picture.

excellent shot of the dhobiwallah at the right instant, almost as a silhouette standing out on the Ganga waters, and under a beautiful light affording blueish/pinkish colors

Very beautiful scene, there is something mysterious and sacred that defines Indian tradition. Well taken.

Beautiful colours and the perspective of course broken by the scaffold. The silhouette of the dhobi and the flashes of bright red are wonderful. Very well depicted against the soft light of the river. thanks for sharing. Have a nice day.

Ciao e buona settimana

Varanasi looks like a great place to photograph, especially with its delicate morning light rising above the holy river. What really stands out in your picture is the sparkling trail of water framing the man's dark silhouette. You have a lot of skill to capture that effect! Pure magic for a magical place.

Hello Dwaipayan - You caught the dhobiwallah at precisely the right moment as the spray of water is beautifully clear in in early morning light and he makes a super focal point in this peaceful scene. Your light management is lovely; the almost silhouetted man has some nice subtle detailing and the warm tones across the steps is most attractive. You chosen POV is well balanced and gives the eye plenty to look at and enjoy. Super atmospheric shot. Warm regards Rosemary

This is a fine documentary shot, showing us significant information about everyday life here; but the masterly use of chiaroscuro and silhouette raises the level to that of art. Bravo!

This is a wonderful composition, the steps of the Ghat lead brilliantly into the frame, while the vertical line of the bridge in the misty distance compliments that really well. The man working in the water has been captured at the perfect moment to show his work, his motion and movement with the water drops in mid air. And all of this under this calm, early morning subdued light. Very nicely done.
All the best

well captured scene and I really enjoy the light you had there. I like how the man is not posing for photo but stays busy with his tasks - nicely caught movement.
The whole composition is immaculate with all the details well organized.

A superb daily life shot! You have captured the movement of the man so well as he is about to thrash the cloth against the slab. Fine detailing with the spray of water in the air. Superb soft morning light and to complete the composition we have this beautiful bridge rising from the mist in the BG. Brilliant!

This is a similar view from where we usually see people praying and bathing in the holy river, so a dhobi wallah at work is a nice change. The atmosphere and lovely colours of sunrise are the same. You timed the shot well so that we see the water splashing out of the cloth as he beats it on the wood. Well done.

This caught my eye as a thumbnail, and the full-sized image didn't disappoint me. The moment with the dhobi beating his linen is very well captured. The depth of field is nice, keeping a touch of detail in the background to keep the context of what is happening. The soft morning light reflecting on the sandstone stairs and water is very attractive. A great timely capture and an interesting note, too.

Beautiful light which paints the picture in fine pastel hues. With the stairs you created a fine perspective leading our vision to the bridge. Lovely shot!

hi dwaipayan. now you tear down some of my dreams. i had always thought about varanasi as a mythical place far away from sight and sound, where people are still practicing their thousands of years old traditions even today. but that industrial bridge in the background... oh my, i had never guessed that the ghats are so close to reality. nobody had shown that before. thank you for being honest and waking me up from romantic dreams :)

Hello dwaipayan. What a beautiful and evocative photo. Composition, lighting and colors are fine. Really worth seeing - and great text.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

Your pov is superb, a straight side-by-side line of the repeating steps on the ghat have given an interesting perspective clearly giving the prominence - the silhouetted dhobi walla, an ideal way of pulling the viewer into this shot eventually into the whole image. The warm tones is brilliant, clear crisp in sharp focus and colour is sublime. Great low light capture, Congrats, TFS

Beautiful daily life image at the morning hour. Love the warm and soft glow of the light, yet there is enough definition and detail on the whole image, including the laundry man doing his washing. Love the splashing of the water frozen in mid air. A poetic composition and a wonderful depiction of life in India.
