Benaras, Banaras, Kashi or Varanasi is one of the most iconic & sacred places of India. Unlike most other holy India cities, Varanasi is a unique package for spirituality and devotion. Since its inception it is rightly called as the 'Religious Capital of Hinduism'. Written records as contained in the Mahabharata and other ancient epics mention its existence at least 3000 years old.
Architecture in the old city area dates back to just after Afghan invasion, while in the central and new city it is less than 150 years old. In the 2nd century, for the first time we find a description of Dashashvamedha Ghat with reference to the great horse sacrifice ritual performed by the kings of the Naga dynasty. During the Gupta period (3rd to 6th century), the ghats became the centre of economic and cultural activities. By the 17th century the riverfront landscape (ghats) became prominent in the overall arena of Varanasi. The palatial buildings along the ghats were built under the patronage of the Marathas during the 18th-19th centuries. Even in 19th-20th centuries, many ghats were reconstructed, renamed and reshaped.
During the period between the late 18th and 20th centuries, along the riverfront many monasteries (ashrams), Sanskrit schools, temples, and pilgrim resthouse were built by principalities of different parts of India, such as the Peshvas of Pune, Holkar of Indore, and Scindias of Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), the Bhonshalas of Nagpur (Maharashtra), the Sursand, Bhabhua and Darbhanga estates of Bihar, the Rani Bhavani of Bengal, and the kings of Nepal.
Varanasi is a photographers’ paradise…With my limited capabilities in this field, Varanasi presented an unique opportunity for me to learn this art. My quest was to see & show this oft photographed city slightly differently…yet keeping the basic soul of this place intact.
A man sitting in one of the ghats in afternoon…wonder what he was contemplating or maybe he was enjoying a moment of solitude.
Cropped the picture at the top.

Bonjour, cher Angshu,
En effet, il règne à travers cette composition un grand moment de solitude. Malgré tout, l'on peut imaginer les barques se balancer au gré des vagues et du vent.
Une image bien construite comme à l'accoutumée.

Namaste Angshuman. A meaningful and also lovely image that makes us wonder why does he look so dejected while all around him life goes on.Interesting cropping with just a hint of the distant bank of the river. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello Angshu! This is a very interesting photograph of boats scene and boy and a very interesting note to accompany it too.
This street shot is about perspective and depth you achieve here with some nice colors to add interest in fairly dull for children day. But the bright colors do add the visual aspect of the shot to cheer up the rather threatening sea and this provides good overall contrast to this atmosphere. Well done

the title is a good sumary of the image, well framed with the lonely man seated on a high point looking at the boats on the river below. I would have cropped more the top to erase the boats with persons to magnify your message.

J'aime beaucoup la construction de cette image. J'aime l'emplacement de la tour et du jeune homme solitaire qui regarde les barques. Une image qui raconte une histoire.

The distance between the person and the boats in the background is giving depth to the composition. The point bof view is showing the details and colors of the boats. The good luminosity is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Guess what ! I like this one !
So representative of Varanasi, overcrowded at some places, allowing moments of loneliness and quietness, just a couple of ten meters away
Very clear and luminous shot with perfectly natural colors
have a nice evening

This is an interesting view which gives us some idea of life in Varanasi. This is really a place to find people absorbed by religion in various ways, while ordinary everyday life goes on around them. Like you write, we cannot know what this man sitting on the ghat is up to. He may actually be thinking of the ongoing test match against Australia, but we would like to imagine him praying, because that's the thing to do here. Meanwhile there is a fine view of the boats anchored by the ghat while people are crossing the river behind. You cropped this nicely leaving just a narrow slice of land at the top.

so many scenes to photograph in Varanasi. I like the composition here with this lone man high above the river and the row of empty boats.
Pleasant quiet atmosphere found in this very busy place. Varanasi is the photographer's paradasie and such a fascinating city.

Hi NAMASTE dear Angshuman
So impressive image by perfect composition and unique combination! Nice new boats! When I visited there 20 years ago, the boats were so dirty and almost collpased. The time has changed. Vivid and clear image as usual. Many tnaks for your sharing and have a good day!

You have well managed to take to the shot under the momemt of solitude. A well composed picture with nice proportion and the main subject off and center arrangement. I enjoy the colourful details from the boats.
Have a nice November 1,
Highmountains (2251) 2012-11-01 12:04
There is depth and brightness in the photograph. This gives it a strong moof of serenity. The shimmering blue waters, the light breeze that makes the red and yellow flags fly, the lonely man sitting on top of a ghat, and ofcourse - the empty white boats... all this has been captured with excellence.
Like the fact the you have kept the sky totally out of the perspective.
Excellent and appropriate framing.
Thanks for sharing.

This solitude fig is an icing on the cake and he has all the freedom there and looks great being surrounded by these beautiful blue water. And it's the striking contrasty boats which provide beautiful diagonal lines drawing the eye into the centre of the image. The composition and detail in this is superb, you've caught the feel of the moment well to bring a little flavour, perspective and depth to the view. Tremendous shot, so full of interest such a beautiful shot, the subtle light, colours and tone give it a superb feeling. A delightful image, Congrats
Waylim (23320) 2012-11-02 18:32
Very nice moment you captured here with the man enjoying his solitude moment. I'm sure in places like cities in India it is not easy to find peace and quietness sometimes. Here I like the composition with him looking out to the open water and boats. I might have crop away the tiny bit of land on the top to give the feeling of more water, that is just my preference. The rest of the image is great as always.
Leaving soon to the air port. I'm just going to be next door to you. I promise, I will visit India in a few years. Perhaps I will need some of your help planning that trip, India is so big, it is hard to know what to go, other than the obvious. Will be back in a few weeks.

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
the man sitting in one of the ghats, contemplating the sacred river, or probably enjoying the loneliness under the warm light of the afternoon, he is a fantastic element for this composition, to which the boats provide a good graphical effect.
Light, colors and quality of the image are excellent.
It is a beautiful work.
mkamionka (27089) 2012-11-07 14:08
fantastic composition. At first I did not see the man and the photo seemed too simple but after discovering him I have to say it is a real masterpiece. Very well spotted and captured, great work,
