During the Ardh Kumbh Mela, the banks of Prayag was teeming with sadhus. They came in all shapes and sizes, speaking different languages, but with the same ultimate goal of seeking spiritual enlightenment. I found this old sadhu, particularly interesting with his long flowing beard, unkempt hair and well lined face.
To Hindus, spiritual enlightenment has always represented the highest goal in life, the one thing that gives it meaning and purpose. The Sadhus are the Holy men on the path of spiritual enlightenment. They are believed to have existed in the Indian society for thousands of years.A sadhu renounces worldly ties in pursuit of higher values of life. Ideally a Sadhu lives in the society but is detached from its pleasures and pains. Usually they live by themselves and spend their days in devotion of their chosen deity, passing on the wisdom of old. Some perform magical rituals to make contact with the gods, others practise intense forms of yoga and meditation to increase their spiritual powers and acquire mystical knowledge.

Hello Sabya Da,
Not without reason you are called the Master of Potrait. You are in your elements here, each and ever line of the old sadhu seem to be speaking out. Top class quality.

Another impressive and exotic portrait with smart composition and proper deep of field.
Regards.

A very strong portrait Sabyasachi, well framed and with a pleasingly high contrast thanks to the harsh, direct lighting.
His strength of character comes across well, and the background, although busy, is not at all distracting, thanks to the shallow depth of field.
Excellent work.

Cheers,
Ben

You are one helluva good photographer mate. What a portrait, almost as good as the best I have seen on this site, and that too your, that unforgettable face. Not so dramatic but more realistic I suppose. Good use of DOF.
Cheers
Matt

Hi Sabyasachi,

A good strong portrait shot, once again in your style of showing portraits in landscape format which works really well. I like the strong colours and well controlled DOF in this shot.

Best regards,
Paul.

H Sabya,

There really are some interesting people out there, I can't help but feel that the shot is on an angle (I'm basing that on the poles behind the man, not the horizon)

Davy

Hi Sabyasachi, A superb portrait you cave captured great detail in the old mans face & appearence, his hair is very scruffy, he looks very thin & his eyes look thoughtful, perfect skin tone & excellent DOF, with great light, kind regards Wilson.

Hi Sabyasachi.

An excellent portrait!!! The colours and the background are impressive!

Rgs, Oscar

This is a most pleasing portrait. Nice and sharp and some fine colour. I might question your decision to include so much background as I find the figure in black on the left distracting. I'd have cropped it off and gone for a square format.

Another portrait very well composed, with a fine DOF.
With an expresion on this face very deep.
Nice regards,
Jean-Claude

Bonjour Sabyasachi
Superbe portrait de cet homme paré de symboles religieux. C'est d'une grande netteté avec un flou artistique en arrière-plan.
Bravo - merci pour le partage et la note riche en enseignement et bonne soirée.
Nicole

As usual, very good portrait with excellent colours and an extraordinary sharpness. Just a question, why do they look very similar to each other?
Antonio

Hello Sabyasashi

Hi Sabyasachi. A very nice portrait of an old Sadhu at Kumbh Mela. As commented by most TE members me too feel that you have really mastered the art of making portrait through your lens and also your sense. Just made an attempt through a WS to focus on your theme -- the Sadhu. Hope you may like it. REgards.

Hi Sabyasachi. This man appears to be a very wise person. Part of me wishes you cropped out a lot of the left to concentrate focus on the man. I can appreciate you were trying something new but I think I prefer a traditional composition here. tfs Sabyasachi.

Hi Sabyasahchi,
Another fine addition to your Kumbh series!
The well framed, off center subject, the serious expression of which you captured very well, the blurred BG slope and scene balance the image ... Nice warm colors, of course!

Hi Sabyasachi
Nice portrait here. I like the low dof and non centered head of this man. Sahdus are really incredible. Great note as usual

hi sabyasachi

your country is so much rich in different cultures that is comfortable to share many different portraits of people living on the wild side of the life ; I think the spirituality has gone to France , currently there is only one god :MONEY

Hi Sabya, so beautiful this portrait!
i like a lot to see the signs of the life in his face...
great expression of the man and great work as usual!

Olá Sabyasachi, you show us again how good you are with portraits. We've seen many pictures of these Holy men, but I never get tired of watching any new one that you present to us. Perfect composition, impressive details and excellent shallow dof, giving us a nice blurred context in the background. Really good, once again!
With greetings from Lisbon,
Ricardo

I thnik I allready saw this man photo. Nice colors and a pretty portrait. Is easy take photo of this people on their spiritual place? If was I, I'll not like that people take photos of me.

Good unsharp background.

Wow. What a great one. I love the white background contrasting so much with the dark skin with a so well rendered textured.

Greetings from Hué, Vietnam.

Hi Sabya, big picture once again, i particularly like the way this sadhu has "power", "charism" ... despite his thin, he seems so big in mind ...
Of course a deep portrait, excellent

Hi Sabyasachi,
A beautiful portrait of the Saddhu with sharp details, great light and fine colors. The blurred BG gives more impact to the main subject. An appropriate note too.
Cheers

The lighting here is rather special and I like the wizened features of the sadhu. The background contrasts nicely, with a light airy feel, and the slope enhances. Very fine work, Sabyasachi. Thanks for the note...later.

Dear Sabyasachi
A strong portrait, but may not be one of your best. The light was too harsh, as a result his eyes are squinted, though one can still the intensity coming out of it. But the rugged texture of his skin stands out. I think the lady in the black shawl on the left, though OOF tends to take some attention. So why not crop her out? Just an idea. Excellent framing & composition

Hi Sabyasachi,
I knew nothing about sadhus before joining TE, then I discovered them thanks to a number of members here, I like your version, first because you have a great talent to realize portraits and have the tech side right, then because of the intensity of the expression, which seems to be a constant with sadhus.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves
