Photographer’s Note

Prayag at Allahabad apart from being thronged by millions of devotees for the holy dip during the Kumbh Mela, also plays host to thousands of Brownheaded and Blackheaded Gulls who fly all the way from the high plateaus of Central Asia and Europe during the winter. A favourite haunt is the Sangam with its constant flow of pilgrims making offerings to the river goddess. The Brownheaded and Blackheaded Gulls are differentiated on the basis of the wing pattern. Like most gulls, they are highly gregarious in winter, both when feeding or in evening roosts. This bird was captured early morning as it flew over my boat. You can catch hint of the rising sun on the horizon.
