It is dawn on Dal lake, as flower sellers go about their business in shikaras (boats).
Dal Lake, the pride of Kashmir and a World Heritage site, has within its area, four enormous sheet-like expanses of water - Lokutdal, Boddal, Gagribal and Nagin. The rest of its surface being broken up alternatively by man-made strips of land inhabited by whole colonies of people and vegetation. Thus the lake is not a flat, unbroken mass of water, but a labyrinth of waterways, awash with a lifestyle not encountered elsewhere in the world. The Dal is Srinagar's major life-support system with its wide variety of marine life: fish, lotus roots, plants and floating gardens. The hospitable boat people of Kashmir trace their descent from Noah. Entire families live on boats, accepting a way of life that was bequeathed to them by their ancestors and clinging stubbornly to their traditional culture.
However the Dal has been battling for survival today. The once crystal-clear mirror-like water of the lake is heavily infested with weeds and pollutants. Once breathtakingly beautiful, the lake today takes in all the city's sewage. Human refuse from the houseboats is discharged into it. As a result, the quality of water has deteriorated and the lake's vast reserves of aquatic life are rapidly shrinking. In 1200 A.D., the Dal covered an area of 75 sq km. By the 1980s, only 25 sq.km survived, and today the Dal stretches over barely 12 sq.km. LET US SAVE THE DAL !

Another excellent image from what seems to be your vast pool. Very well composed with nice reflections. And an excellent note. I agree with you, Let us save the Dal before it becomes extinct.

Very nice shot with good reflections in the water and the flower creating a good mix of colours. Maybe some more light would give an even more successful shot.
But well done!

Nice compo with the boat on the very silent and reflective water. I like the details included - fine daily life example of the place. Nice work

Another good post with a very good note. I like the reflection of the setting sun in the lake. My only complaint is that the boatman and the flowers on the boat are a bit under exposed. But I can understand the problem- if you have adjusted the exposure to take out those things, then you might have lost the colour of reflection on the water!

Lovely composition! The semi silhouette picture and colors create a wonderful mood to this scene. And the reflections of the man round it up nicely. TFS!

Looking through your collection, this shot catches my attention. I love boats but it is the colours and the wonderful lighting on the water surface that make this a successful shot. I love the composition and mood too. Well done!! Best regards and thanks for visiting.

Namaste Sabyasachi. A picture of such harmony- that is, between man and nature. Pity there is seldom harmony between man and man. Putting politics aside, the reflection and colours are magical. Beautiful reflection. Regards, Klaudio

Une photo magique et magnifique avec une excellente lumière et des reflets d'argent. Le bateau est bien placé et il est mis en valeur par un beau bleu et surtout par les fleurs et le navigateur en contre-jour.

You have a wonderful gallery full of great portraits. Your last post that I also love, lead me here. Marvellous lighting and a beautiful contrast of the sillouette with the bright reflection of the water. Nice ripples on the water. Great atmosphere. I love the placement of the seller. I liked the improvments of the ws of Didier.

Hi Sabyasachi, this is the photo that to me it appeals to to the inside of your splendid gallery more. Beautifulst light and colors, splendid glares, optimal composition, even if to me seem a little sad one.
I hope that you SAVE THE DAL!
Angshu (56758) 2007-07-21 21:55
The colours are superb as should be in the paradise. Hope the Paradise lost can be regained. Exposure control was tricky, but well managed. A lovely old gem from your gallery.
