Photographer's Note

It is dawn on Dal lake, as flower sellers go about their business in shikaras (boats).
Dal Lake, the pride of Kashmir and a World Heritage site, has within its area, four enormous sheet-like expanses of water - Lokutdal, Boddal, Gagribal and Nagin. The rest of its surface being broken up alternatively by man-made strips of land inhabited by whole colonies of people and vegetation. Thus the lake is not a flat, unbroken mass of water, but a labyrinth of waterways, awash with a lifestyle not encountered elsewhere in the world. The Dal is Srinagar's major life-support system with its wide variety of marine life: fish, lotus roots, plants and floating gardens. The hospitable boat people of Kashmir trace their descent from Noah. Entire families live on boats, accepting a way of life that was bequeathed to them by their ancestors and clinging stubbornly to their traditional culture.
However the Dal has been battling for survival today. The once crystal-clear mirror-like water of the lake is heavily infested with weeds and pollutants. Once breathtakingly beautiful, the lake today takes in all the city's sewage. Human refuse from the houseboats is discharged into it. As a result, the quality of water has deteriorated and the lake's vast reserves of aquatic life are rapidly shrinking. In 1200 A.D., the Dal covered an area of 75 sq km. By the 1980s, only 25 sq.km survived, and today the Dal stretches over barely 12 sq.km. LET US SAVE THE DAL !
