Pictured here is the confluence of the Zanskar and the Indus River near the village of Nimmu in Ladakh. The one with the dirty green colour (flowing from left to right) is the Indus river and the shining blue one is the Zanskar river. The Zanskar river originates in the Zanskar range, it is a tributary of the mighty Indus. Indus river originates in the Tibetan plateau near Lake Mansarovar and drains in the Arabian Sea near Karachi.
The Indus river does not freeze completely in winter, though it freezes in places and huge masses of ice are seen floating in the river. On the other hand Zanskar river completely freezes in winter enabling the world famous and much documented 'Chadar (blanket of ice) Trek'. The 'Chadar Trek' is one of the most diffcult and beautiful treks in India. In order to escape the harsh winter local villagers from the high reaches of Ladakh undertake an arduous and perilous 9 day trek over frozen Zanskar river to reach Chilling on the Leh highway. It is done in February each year when the river ice is the most stable. They have been doing this trek for centuries. Casualties to life and livestock is not uncommon. Nowadays few tourists also try to do this trek with professional help.
I want to go on this trek in Feb'15, because what I hear is that a new road is being blasted through these rock faces and in about another 5 years time the trek will no longer exist in its present exciting form.
Thanks for stopping by.
P.S As the dates for the Indian General Elections (biggest democratic process in the world)have been declared I will be very busy for the next 2 months working on a statistical project (working almost 16-17 hours a day with extensive travelling). Sadly during this period I will not be as regular on TE as I have been for the last 6-7 months. I will swing by to see and show whenever I get some time. Take care.

what an incredible panorama can be seen from this POV! Well chosen! I like the color of the river which looks almost unreal against the greyish hills. Nicely composed and with excellent sharpness.
Thanks for sharing

I can feel the regret, in your tone, that you will not be able to post on TE as readily as recently. The time will soon pass and it is easy to just pop in and out when out have a few minutes!
I am learning so much about an unfamiliar region which is visually spectacular. The confluence of these two rivers creates an aqua pattern and guide through the barren slopes of the mountains. It is breathtakingly beautiful.
The people in the f/g give us a sense of immense scale.
Thank you for sharing this and good luck with your proposed trek,

this place is awesome and you have captured its openness and scale superbly in this amazing shot. It must be wonderful to stand and take all this landscape in first hand, but this shot goes a fair way to demonstrate its beauty and majesty. Glorious!

Sweet memories again !
I think that everyone going to Leh stops at the very same place to watch Indus and Zanskar waters at their confluence. Impressive difference of blue colors between the 2 rivers. a majestuous place indeed
Best regards, have a nice day

This is a stunning view of mountains and rivers and it is especially fascinating to watch the clear difference of colours of the rivers.
I wish you good luck with your important job and sincerely hope that the elections will be successful and not disturbed by any violence. I covered the elections in 1989 and 1996 on location in India, but there will be no more elections for me since I am now retired.

Very beautiful with the difference in colour between both rivers.
An extremely mighty landscape!
The buildings and the truck give us a good sense of the scale.
You have a lot of courage to undertake this trek during the wintermonths next year.
Good luck and best regards from Belgium, Paul

What a scene. Epic is the word and as I read your note, the word epic takes on new meaning as I try to imagine this harsh trek. Such wonderful colors and light and a fine sense of the imposing scale of things here. Thanks as always for sharing.
And the best of luck with your work on the elections too. I hope you will continue to find the time to post when you can.

Gorgeous shot, love the turquoise sky and reflected onto the river as well. A wonderful corner where the river split or comes together. I can feel the thin air and cold. Excellent quality photo, maybe just a little burnt out on the clouds.

I like the way the river is leading my eye toward the mountains in the background which is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing th details and the colours of the mountains. The good lminosityis enhancing the beauty of the colours. Have a nice day.
Angshu (56760) 2014-03-11 3:54
This picture proves what I have heard...that the waters of River Indus doen't change colours, but those of Zanskar does...when I went (I have posted a pic as well), the Zanskar was brown & muddy...and I was told that the colour changes post monsoon to what you show in your picture...
Well done shot from Nimmu

Whenever I visit India in the near future, I'd like to visit this place. Those turquoise waters and snow capped mountains are simply stunning. Would you consider recommending tourists to visit this place (with regards to safety and accessibility)?
Thanks for sharing this one. Really stunning place.

Hello Subho, I know exactly where that place is. I've taken the same picture some years before but you managed well to get bright hues and a perfect sharpness, it's on the road to go to Lamayuru, the houses and road weren't there so I note a modification, a fantastic region, regards
GiovanniG (3563) 2015-04-27 3:03
Splendid compostion and narrative. Love the perspective on the rivers and the starkness of these mountains. Spot on!
