Soon after leaving Leh, the capital of Ladakh, and gaining altitude enroute the Khardungla Pass (meaning the ‘(mountain) Pass of Lower Castle’), we got to see the unmistakable sight of Shanti Stupa – the stupa is topped by a spired white hemisphere. The white colour stood out against the shades of brown of the barren mountain slopes.
Shanti Stupa : Built in 1991 by Ladakhi and Japanese Buddhist monks to promote world peace, and to commemorate the 2500 years of Buddhism. The stupa, located around 5 Km from Leh town, was built on top of a hill 4267 metres high. A part of Leh town can be seen behind the Stupa hill.
Khardungla Pass, is the highest motorable road in the world as signs put up by the Border Roads Organization proudly proclaim, at an altitude of 18380 feet (5602 metres).
The views on the entire route would make you gasp, both literally and figuratively. Climbing up to stratospheric heights with the Ladakh range to the south and Karakoram to the north, layers of mountains in shades of barrenness and then the snow capped peaks at almost touching distance all around....I tried to capture this in this picture!

Wow, this is a lovely shot, Angshuman. I was also in leh last month, but did not quite have this impressive vantage point of Shanti stupa. You made the most of the dramatic shadows on the day. An excellent composition.

Hello Angshuman ,
I like a lot this kind of moutain panorama . The contrast is fantatstic beween the green valley in the FG , the yeloow hills (with the stuppa as a strong focal point) , and the grey range in the BG . The superb sky and the game of light and shade adds to the beauty .

The distance between the buildings and the top of the mountains is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the mountains. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Quel paysage impressionnant. Le point de vue est superbe et tout guide le regard vers cette structure blanche au sommet de la colline. J'aime la qualité et la netteté des détails.

Très beau paysage remarquablement photographié. les différences de lumière renforcent l'aspect 3D de l'image.

You found an excellent high POV for this breathtakingly beautiful sight.
A high-quality work.
Attractive horizontal layers, each with a different dominant colour.
Beautiful play of light and shadow and nice contrasts.
It also looks a bit like a painting.
Best regards, Paul

Beautiful image. I get short of breath just thinking about the elevation here. I remember crossing Chola pass in Nepal, I was so tire and I stop to breath for air but there was not enough oxygen in the air. I had a panic attack. I had to calm myself down.
Buddhism is a more peaceful that dealt more with the inner self…this image transpire that feeling and also the climbing of the route give you that sense of accomplishment and self worth. I think that is part of the challenge and that why I did the 15 day hike in the Himalaya. It was challenging and it was rewarding at the end to know that we had taken it to the limit. We are stronger that we think. We just never let ourselves the opportunity to go such crazy things.
Anyway, excellent shot and what a view to behold and cherish for a life time for anyone who has been there.

Leh is really picking it's speed to lure tourists from India and abroad. And this type of pics are enhancing beauty of Leh Laddakh. I like your picture which is very different and unique. Especially the layers of the hills are looking very nice. The shadow is also very different in some areas we can see in this picture.
Note : Najafgarh is my Hometown in New Delhi. This is famous for sports personalities like Virender Sehwag and Sushil Kumar Wrestler. This is a rural area of Delhi and has produced many sports personalities, Arjuna awardees, Hockey plyers represented India.

Awesome view from a very good dominant position
Good balance between lights and shades
If I was there I'll make a very large panoramic view
danos (85165) 2014-08-28 6:47
fascinating the view as the presentation of the different colours of the rock formations as spread from the middle of the frame until the backdrop of it.I like the excellent light and colour management with the green foreground to make the image even more effective.
abmdsudi (41984) 2014-08-28 7:05
What a geological beauty in such a subtle clarity well worth all your effort to get there with good choice of viewpoint. The strong patches of green foreground leads through the scene to the icing on the cake - the white catchy white stupa. The brown, deep grey and white snow peaks combination are just awesome to look at and the depth is further enhanced by subtle shades and shadows. I feel the cloud formation clinches the entire spectacle superbly. Absolutely wonderful capture, and tfs

This is a fantastic landscape! I like a lot the way it seems to be divided in layers and even the shadows in foreground add to the composition. That little temple at the top is just perfect! Very good dof and quality. Colours are excellent, this is surely an incredible region!
holmertz (39513) 2014-09-01 0:52
Although competition is tough I would rate this as among the most fascinating Himalayan sceneries you have shown us. It probably has to do with the very varied types of nature, from the fertile green valley to the increasingly more rugged mountains, and also because of the many colours seen here. The technical quality of this photo is also highly impressive.
tyro (19766) 2014-09-07 5:46
A very interesting and informative note and a very fine photograph to illustrate it!
This view takes your breath away - literally - because I imagine that altitude sickness, which we normally associate with climbers and walkers, can probably kick in here even in a motor vehicle!
A very well composed photograph with the stupa perfectly placed in the frame, surrounded by the houses at lower level and the magnificent barren mountainsides above. Glorious light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

love viewing your photos from India, they're always so inspiring.
India seems to have never ending beauty up in the Northern areas, so mountainous with stunning landscapes.
exactly what we see here too.
a fine horizontally layered photo of varying colors!
My girlfriend and I will be traveling to India in Feb/March
2015. We're going to book our flight sometime this week.
We want to be in India for sure for the HOLI festival March 6th. I'll keep you posted

this is so beautiful that I cannot believe it is real. There are so many colors and variety of such different layers that it looks more like a painting that a photograph. Spectacular view, perfectly showed here by you.
