The Chorten within the compounds of the Tabo Monastery. It was constructed after the earthquake of 1975 when a new monastery was built. It here that H.H. the Dalai Lama held the Kalachakra ceremonies in 1983 and 1996.
Tabo Monastery was founded by the buddhist king (and royal lama) Yeshe O'd in 996 A.D. A renovation inscription says it was renovated 46 years later by Yeshe O'd's grandnephew, the royal priest Jangchub O'd. These royal patrons, the kings of the Purang-Guge kingdom, were descended from the ancient Tibetan monarchy. Their ancestors migrated to west Tibet in the 10th century. By the end of the 10th century their territory stretched from Ladakh to Purang and included all of western Tibet (ancient Zhang Zhung). Successive members of this dynasty built many monasteries along the trade routes linking the far corners of their kingdom.
Located at an altitude of 3050m, the Tabo Monastery is quiet often referred to as the Ajanta of the
Himalayas. The importance of this monastery can be judged from the fact that its significance
is second only to the Tholing Gompa in Tibet in the entire Himalayan region.
The Tabo gompa is basically a complex that houses a number of small gompas, temples and monasteries.
It spreads over an area of 6300 sq m and is surrounded by high boundary wall.
The monastery has temples of Tug-Lha-Khang (The Temple of the Enlightened Gods), Ser-Khang (The
Golden Temple), Dkyil-Khor-Khang (The Mystic Mandala Temple) and Brom-ston Lha khang (The
Temple of Dromton) are the few very important to name. The monastery also treasures some centuries
old paintings which are not allowed to be photographed.

This monastery is very strange, but also a beautiful shape and stunning, vivid colors. It looks like that was arranged with Lego bricks. How do I see the monks are already using solar energy, modernity. Wonderful, deep blue sky contrasts with raw rock. Composition I really like.

Again very interesting architecture of the Western Himalayas. The brown mountainside that fills a large part of the view is awesome and a little frightening. t looks so barren and inhospitable, whereas the monastery seems quite inviting and the chorten is splendidly colourful. The picture lacks a bit of sharpness and the colours seem to me slghtly oversaturated, but that could be an effect of the high altitude and an intensity of the light that I am not used to.

Namaskar dear Arunava
A beautifully coloured photo, of an intriguing subject. My monitor is playing up at the moment, but there seems to be a very definite halo around the mountain in the BG. This could be my technical problem, not yours, but usually results from over sharpening or use of the selective tool. Anyway, an attractive photo to be sure.

Hello Arunava. An interesting and subtle photo. Intense colors and good light. Very informative text. I see that modern technology has found its way here (solar collector).

Wonderful subject and setting here, Arunava, with nice bright colors and a fascinating note. There does seem to be a file size issue - only 95kb - which ends up making the shot suffer in terms of sharpness and creates some ghosting and pixellation in spots, but that doesn't take away from the shot's creativity!
josepmarin (56591) 2012-10-26 7:12
the graphical and chromatic contrast of the chorten with the intense blue of the sky is really fantastic, and provides an enormous visual power to your composition.
The strong light is managed well, and the palette of colors is very rich. It is a beautiful photo, in which we can feel the purity of the air to more of 3000m.
P.S: the strong compression of the file and its small size (93Kb) they have created some unwanted effects in the edge of the mountains, but it can be solved by means a bigger size of file, up to the 300 pix accepted by the site.

I was reading your interesting note about the place, Arunava, and amazing that this was built only some 30+ years ago, on an 3050m altitude.
The info. help comprehand what we see here.
A bit sharpness must had been added, but nevertheless, an intriguing and unique photo about this place.
Have a nice weekend,
