This photo was taken at near the Pathankot train station on my way up Dharamsala where the Tibetion government in Exile. Pathankot is a dull place and it is mainly used as a crossroad to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Srinagar. This photo of the beggar really explaines many things about India in general. You can see the most extreme conditions like the poorest and the richest (not only in terms of wealth) but in color, manner, friendliness, etc.

This photo does not explain much about India. Agreed there is a vast gulf between haves and have-nots, but there is another aspect of India which, I am sorry to say, not many people from affluent western cultures know or even understand. "Renunciation" is that aspect -- a conscious severance from normal life in search of something broadly spiritual but not necessarily so. This man here in your picture could be one of them.
The face of the subject is in shadows but the overall impression of a vagabond comes out clearly.
