this one is for frida (rhiannon) as she is in love with horses. in the ashram where i met all those naga sadhus ( see previous posts) there were also devotees who lead "normal" lives, most of whom happened to be villagers. this is primarily a rural area. one of the devotees is a rich landlord (very rustic). he has a lot of horses . i think they are of the "mehelwar" breed , because of the shape of their ears. these horses have been trained to dance to the tunes of the drums and other musical instruments. how ,,, they have been trained, i dont know(yet) , but i donot expect the method to be uncruel. these horses perform for the villagers.
anyway in the photograph there is this mare which is waiting for its turn to perform, while another horse is busy giving its performance and the crowd is looking on. the man closest to us is the handler of this horse, while the other one next to him is the owner of these horses.
this is a pretty common scene in the rural areas in india
edit: ive added a workshop (bad quality though) to show you another scene from this event
edit again(10-11-2004): have a look at another one from pakistan :)
same same , but different hehe

Inventive shot of this event. I think the anlge works well here, as does the focussing on the horse far left, with the action thrown slightly off focus.

The angle gives a capture a special feeling. The tree in the middle spreads inbetween horses and naturally frames the upper part.
The crowd in the bottom complements the description of the event and the b/w version gives the scene a serious meaning.

Happy Birthday Sohrab!! I like this shot very much and I can tell you used your 17mm again;-)) great to have this first ground with the horse on the left hand side of the frame, the tilt and i like the overall swing of this photo;-)
I do like also very much the other one (ws) eventhough it is not in focus, for it has a life, a movement... greta pic!!
When did you have time to shoot all this? is it far from delhi? I thought you had to study so much for your exams..;-)) lol Happy B'day again my friend! sorry out of smileys now...

Getting under a horse... Sohrab you're crazy!!! :)
But you got the shot and kept your head intact so all's well
You've done an admirable job at turning the ordinary into something extraordinary. It has that hallmark of the crafty photojournalist to it-- little things that just add so much like the branches of the tree in the background spreading out from the middle of the frame to reach right to the corners; the curve formed by the row of people...
This has been a great series.
It's strange being under a horse isn't it? I had a run in with some mounted police at a protest in August, didn't get almost trampled but copped a healthy dose of horse dribble in the process. Unfortunately I don't feel the resulting picture is good enough for TE.

very nice photo Soh!
I like horses a lot, and the way they move and their energy (I have some pics of horses too).
I particularly like your POV here which gives more power to the picture.
Nicely seen and captured.

I find your title very misleading here Sohrab...
Waiting is for me stillness, boredom. Here the posture of the horses along with the angle you choose makes it wild in my eyes. A lot of tension, and my eye wander around to bring a order to the mess. Tha fact that the horses is pushed out by the frame and cropped makes it very powerful in my opinion.
I think this is wonderful and exotic!

I am touched that you've dedicated this photo to me, Sohrab!
I like it a lot. Your angle and POV is excellent. Makes me feel like I am there, sitting on the ground and watching theese beautiful horses.
I like that you have the focus on the horse in the front on the right side and the horse standing on its backlegs are blurred.
The horses equipment looks beautiful!
B&W suits great here and I like the high contrasts.
Very well done.
Frida - the horse-lover :)
