Photographer's Note

The Gandhara Kingdom was centred around Purushupura (Peshawar) and Takashila (Taxila) in contemporary Pakistan during the first millennium CE. Its art was both eclectic and humanistic in expression. This work, to be seen in India's National Museum, dates from the 2nd century CE, and depicts the Buddha in human form, rather than symbolically.
