Back to the slums of Delhi with this post.

This was shot for a planned story of Dalit sweepers. Specifically, the Balmiki Dalits. These are the people who come out early in the morning to clean the streets of Delhi.

I shot this at Sangam Park which is the Basti where many of the Balmiki live. Ironically enough, the person who's area this was to sweep hadn't shown up for a couple of days, and this person is a substitute sweeper. She was complaining to my host and interpreter that the area was such a mess.

I was surprised to find that it was a woman doing the sweeping. One of the things that the Balmiki politicians are trying to change is for the women sweepers to only sweep in areas where they have access to facilities to use the toilet.

I shot this, the same time I shot this boy.

Great composition with the 3 sets of stairs in the background adding perspective, and good tones. I like this kind of real life shots.

She has a lot of work ahead of her, such a dirty alley and how many more alleys will she clean before the day is done? This is daily life and you've captured it well.

Hey Vic,

Photos like this really make one appreciate their position in the world. it's amazing how lifestyles overseas differ so much, and it's thanks to traveling we can see the vast extent in the life's of people.

Thank you for a taste of the world, usually kept hidden due to peoples inability to see what,. life is in other countries, and how it's a very different world.

Take care
Andrew

A dramatic picture..
good details..

Hello Vic,

Very fascinating behind the scenes look at the slums of Delhi. The vertical frame does well to convey the length of this alley and just how much work needs to be done. How she's positioned away from the wet ground and rubbish also suggests what must be some very unpleasant conditions to have to work in.

Stairs, light behind the stairs,
Uncovered details walls,
and the object in action.
Perfect composition.

the quite interesting is reversed trolley just beside object !

Hello Vic,

It's a very nice and beautifull picture like I love that you propose us here.
Colours, contrast and ligtning are very beautiful with all of this colors and different texture which are visible in this picture.
We can only regret over exposure visible in the background.

Regards,
Damien.

hi vic,
you found a great place...but it cries for a closer look into the sweeper...most probably - with her face, preferably - with some expression on her face portraying efford, or something...
anyway, i appreciate a lot you photographing that backyard world...
best wishes, j.
