Dhauli Hills. This is the place where institutionalization of peace and compassion took place probably for the first time in human history. Emperor Ashoka, waged war against Kalinga ( major parts of present Orissa in India) during 271 BC. Dhauli is the place where a major battle took place, in which thousand of Kalinga soldiers died. The landscape which you see in the photo was strewn with dead bodies and the river Dhaya was flowing with blood. The violence and agony in the battlefield transformed emperor Ashoka’s mind and he started questioning the need for war. He embraced Bhuddism and built institutions for peaceful management of the nation. His ideas are found in the rock edicts in Dhauli Hills. During 1970s, an Indo-Japanese collaboration built a pagoda on the top of the hills to commemorate Ahoka and the principles of peace and compassion. This lion is also a part of the pagoda. The manner in which the lion is sitting and overlooking the battlefield struck me as a theme for war and peace.

The sky was cloudy when I visited the hills. I tried white fluorescent light mode in WB and managed to get the blue sky effect. In addition increasing the contrast helped to get the required effect.

Good composition with the statue overlooking the landscape. The picture looks soft, maybe you could try some techniques to get sharp pics?
