A little girl in a pensive mood as she watches other kids her age going to school. She isn't fortunate enough and she isn't the only one in this vast country of billions where education (or the lack of it) for the poor and underprivileged is a burning problem.
This picture was taken early morning at a place called Tung, a tiny station on the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The train passes through mountains and forests, brilliantly arrayed in rows of oaks, shining rows of magnolia and blushing rhododendrons. It stops every now and then for water, since it's quaint engine runs on steam. But each of these stops takes you closer to the luxuriant bounty of the Himalayas and the lovely people who stay there. It was one of these stops that took me to this girl.

It is a dream of mine to go on a trip on that railway line. I like the colors on that photo and the square frame. I am wondering if you enhanced the saturation alot or if the colors were that bright already.
I like the expression of the girl too.
Thank you for sharing.

Hello Sabyasachi, I love the saturated colors, they fit the mood of the picture in an odd-perfect way...the way misery surrounds us and we cover it with joyful colours
anjan (1086) 2006-06-29 9:16
well done buddy, brought out a definite problem of india with a stunning picture. i kinda like the colours here, suits the mood perfectly.

A moving shot, Sabyasachi, and an interesting note to accompany it. For my taste it's a bit over-saturated, but the image is wonderful in capturing the longing in the child's eyes and in documenting the poverty in which she apparently lives.

the history of the littlel girl is moving, misery and poverty is one of the greatest injustice of our world, known as modern, can us make it disappear as quickly as possible, if one wants one can.
At the beginning I found your photograph too much contrasted, but after having read your note I find that this strong contrast is really in adequacy with the situation, and it is really a superb catch of view.

Beautiful portrait Sabyasachi, I am just a bit bothered by the lack of sharpness on this girl face. Is it a scanned picture ? Anyway, except that, the colors, the lights and the girl's expression and face are just amazing.

Again anaother nice portrait. What I like most is the colour tone here. So contrasting! I like the expression on her face. You have captured a burning problem in our society through your lens. Congratulations

Hi Sabyasachi. A thought provoking portrait. It is poignant in its message and evokes a strong sense of injustice that a child is denied what others take for granted. Her expression is powerful and is made even stronger through the vivid colours that in their brightness do not manage to negate the undercurrent of sadness. Well done. Regards, Klaudio

Very nice and moving picture Sabyasachi. I love the colours. This very strange green where we can see a key (or at least this is what I see) is very unique. Congratulations agin.

I love the expression you've captured on her face, the way her hands are folded together. I love your note too.
I am not keen on the (apparently) over processed colours, nor that big green thing in the background that dominates the photo and takes far too much attention away from your subject.

Hi Sabyasachi, I do not know ..... TL or TE
I adjusted my evaluation cause
ok, fair is fair, oversaturation is admissable by PP, it makes it a bit unnatural but in fact is on the same level of turning it in to a B&W where all colors are banned, also a rather hard turn that has its value on that level.
Still my appreciation goes most to the tender look of the girl wich radiates the real power of this shot and the colors are a bit in contrast to this, less appropriate to feel of the subject but functional as eyepuller.
