If you are taking pictures at Sealdah Station and did not get a permission from so-called self-established curator ( AKA RPF , Railway Police Force ) at Sealdah Station you may end up going to jail even... and funny is so many people will just watch your situation and have fun including some Genuine NEWS reporter who are roaming arround the Station premises and started to find out some exciting NEWS Scoop without taking permission too...
Yes, i was caught up by them while shooting particular photograph and taken into their custody for two hours.. They did nothing with me just asked me to simply wait and waste my time to show me his power !! He asked me to delete all my images from my camera and thats what i did... and i was lucky enough before i deleted all the images from the camera i had saved this in another memory card..( only photo from Sealdah Station )...
So beware in Kolkata... sometime situation may be funny and against you, I did not believe this cos i still think it is my own place.. I spent most of my life there itself...
This is dedicated to my Kolkata friend Arnab Chatterjee... have a look here for him .

I am so glad this one survived Sandip - it is one of those images that is worth looking at deeply - for the fine detail even in the seemig simplicity of the silhouette - fine degrees of seperation here make this for me a little masterpiece of light and shade - fantastic - a phantom favourite for sure - one of my true favourites from your lens - your story is a warning to us all about permissions - photographers beware ! There has been this story here of English plane spotters and photographers who spent months in Greek jails for following their hobby.
I'm so very glad that it wasn't more serious for you but also it seems worth it to have got this one great image.
best wishes Kev

like this one. fantastic use of light, or maybe the lack of it. just the silhouettes can be "encrypted". coolies chatting on an afternoon.
i know how you felt after being detained for a while by the RPF. i am shocked to hear that you had to delete images (sure you managed to save some, and is why we have this). funny, strange, irritating incident. maybe you should have a press photographers' card now :). after all this, when i went for pics last weekend, Kausik warned me not to shoot on the howrah bridge, where again, photography is "strictly" prohibitted (but we see so many shots from there!).
surprised with the dedication. anyway, i won't complain if you do so. :)

Must have been a bad experience to be
under the power of the self-established curator.I like the limited range of colors and the strong graphic appeal. The light is just great.

because of the story and of its beauty

A Sinister shot, Complimenting to your experience...
Well, as far as RPF, Kolkata is not singled out...Anywhere I have had similar experiences..
I regret to have missed your rest of the shots...

excellent catch, I like it much, you succeeded to catch only the shades of the persons, a highly contrasted picture. It reminds me the light Mc Curry has handle in one of his Station picture....

That is out of this world, Sandip. Such a fine image, a shadow play on the floor of a major railway station. One of your best photos if nt the best. Honestly, congratulations!

excellent contrejour dear sandip! the only pity would be the man in the middle who is cut in half... sad story of this worldwide imbecile power of some bureaucrats ... it gives this shot a whole new touch;-)
keep shooting sandip!

Amazing what happened to you , I cannot imagine what would happen to a foreigner ...
Good idea for the backup so you could share this one: no visible face, living in the shadow of the society. well seen.

very nice image Sandip. Just this one is worth all the trouble ;).
Fortunatelly deleted images in most cases can be restored - unless you have recorded some new ones on this card. Type "recovering deleted images from CF" in Google and follow the links. Good luck!

Lucky for you to have saved this. I hate those kind of people. They have some little power so they want to use it. Stupid guy. The photo is fantastic. I love the dark moodiness of this photo so much. Mysterious is probably the best word.

very well done

ver good idea and nicely caught, even though they're only silhouettes, we can easily guess who they are and whet they are doing. Shadows and light are the substance of photography, wherever there's both, there's good photography. You were lucky to keep that one. It reminds me one of Maciek's almost abstract shot.
I'm worried this photo banning trend could spread to all India stations, -or is it already?-, or perhaps is it just another lame attempt of getting additionnal briberies.

Good story but can't say a too impressive pic. If you don't mention its taken at a raiway stn no one can guess it. Good story to attract attention but I never faced such problem in & around Kolkata.Hope you don't face such probs in future & ofcourse if you can handle such situations you can project a better pic of KOLKATA.
