Glory of Howrah Bridge is gone.
There was a time when it was synonymous to Kolkata.
There was a time when it used to be treated as a wonder. And why not? Look, it crosses the wide river Hooghly in a single span, without any pillar connecting it to the river bed. It stands on two 280 feet high pillars with a central span of 1500 ft. between centers of main towers. The anchor arms are 325ft. and the cantilever arms are 468 ft. long at both ends.
Once it was one of the longest bridges of this type in the world.
And the most amazing thing about the bridge is that no bolts and nuts were used in this structure which was made by riveting the steel.
But now, there are so many cantilever bridges in the world, much longer than this old one. Ah yes, it is old. Once a pontoon bridge (in 1874), the Howrah Bridge in present form was commissioned in 1943.
Howrah Bridge is unhappy. River Hooghly is getting dirtier and dirtier every day. The cities it is connecting, are getting more and more populated every day. Howrah Bridge is no more the ONLY link between Kolkata and Howrah. The ‘Second Hooghly Bridge’ has been laid down in 1992. And this new cable bridge, Vidyasagar setu, is one of the longest bridges of its type in Asia … much longer and more gorgeous than its old counterpart.
So, glory of Howrah Bridge is gone.
But Howrah Bridge, you are still the most important link between the twin cities. Your steel ribs carried more than 1,50,000 vehicles and 5,00,000 pedestrians even today. You are still treated as an engineering marvel. You are not only a bridge, you are the icon of Kolkata.
Stay there forever. We adore you … Howrah Bridge.

A very fine composition. The certainly iconic bridge looks great in this mildly pink/blue light and the heavy chain provides a vigorous and original foreground. On that bridge I was arrested by a policeman more than 40 years ago for illegal photography :-). I was immediately set free by his superior who realized I was not a spy for Pakistan.

beautiful presentation of the Howrah bridge as is 'fade out' in the misty atmosphere.I like the strong colours and the clarity on the foreground as tie perfect with the backdrop of the scene.Well done.

Excellent reportage photo my friend.
Nice framing with the ticket ghar and very good composition. I like the inclusion of the chain in the FG a very attractive element in the photo. The bridge may be old but it is looking nice in your photo from a distance.
I think this is taken from Fairlie, am I right?
Very good presentation of the icon of Kolkata. What a beautiful note you have written, it could well find a place in any magazine or newspaper. Well done!! Thanks for sharing.

une belle mise en image du pont. Un beau contraste entre les couleurs fortes du premier plan et le pont perdu dans la brume. Superbe photo.

This is a love presentation of the bridge. With the thick chain pointing to it in the f/g and the bright blue corner of a building framing it on the left, we get a full glimpse of this grand structure.

Dear Alekhya the turquoise building adds some bright colors to the image, a huge chain in Hoogly river harbour, a superb front face pov of the Howrah bridge, I saw in traveller's guides that it's forbidden to take its picture but it appears many time on Te site. sorry I reply first and after I look at the gallery with all photos, thanks, see you

a wonderful show of the new icon of kolkata. Great capture using a very good POV, bit rare in my mind with this bridge. I love the foreground details with the interesting inclusion of that blue at left. Great depth and nice light management. Superb work dear Alekhya. Tfs.

A fascinating note to accompany your image, and one that resonates for me, I never think its fair when people consider what was once a wonder to no longer be so. Once upon a time, the Flatiron in New York was a wonder. Its not an engineering marvel anymore, but still loved! The same applies to many great feats of building around the world, and to my eyes, this is one very impressive bridge with some amazing numbers to go with it. 1500 feet in a single span? That gets a wow from me.
Your chosen view is beautiful too, as we look at it here, you have composed this in a way that the foreground gives me a sense of place, it is not a picture of the bridge, it is a picture of a persons view of the bridge from this place, and that changes its feel significantly, putting much more emphasis on the close connection that you make, and which you show so well in your well thought out note.
Fantastic post, and a true Trekearth one too!
All the best

Excellent photo. The large chain is the main focal point of this photo. There is a great use of depth of field to hold the viewer in the foreground chain as well as the bridge in BG, and the excellent lighting conditions have allowed for very good color saturation. The overall impact is very strong. Very well done.

interesting composition, It's wise decision to have emphasized much of the fg features and naturally direct the eye to the spanning bridge. Fine clarity, exposure is manageable and nice sky hues with excellent contrast. Well done, tfs

This is a well composed image with excellent depth of field. The heavy chain provides nice foreground interest and acts as a lead in towards the bridge.

Ciao e buona domenica

A very nice tribute to the famous Howrah Bridge.
Remember that the same dirty water also flows under that other bridge.
I really like your presentation here and you created an attractive foreground with the bollards and the heavy chains. The colours in the sky make a beautiful backdrop.
The picture has an excellent composition and depth.
Best regards, Paul

It's still very famous and one of the places I want to visit when I go to Kolkata. I like this pov and composition with the chain in foreground and the part of the blue wall on the left. A good shot with good colours and atmosphere!
