Durga Puja is a major festival for Bengalis all around the world. "Sandhi Puja" is the most auspicious part of the Durga Puja. Translated it means worship at the confluence of two lunar days. Goddess Durga is worshipped as the incarnation Devi Chamunda during Sandhi-Puja lasting about 48 minutes (comprising 24 minutes of 8th Lunar day and 24 minutes of 9th Lunar day). 108 is an auspicious number in Indian mythology, thus it is the custom to offer 108 lotuses and 108 lamps with wicks soaked in ghee or camphor to Goddess Durga during this Puja. 108 pink lotuses signify peace and prosperity and 108 lamps are lit for the wellbeing of the humanity. The picture above is a shot of the 108 lamps lit at my ancestral home during recently concluded Durga Puja.
