Railway Station and the Sadhus :
During a recent visit to the Kharagpur Railway station I happen to view this scene.A south India bound train is waiting on the platform with two sadhus in orange outfits taking rest on the platform and waiting for their train to arrive.I did not have a proper camera with me so took the shot with my I-phone 4S to share with you.The plight of uncleanliness with Indian railway stations is more or less uniform all over the country as is evident here too, where construction materials can be seen lying on the platform itself.Due to busy schedules I am not able to shoot photographs often and this shall continue for sometime before I shall be able to upload photos more often, so please do not forget me on Trekearth.
Some tidbits about Kharagpur Railway station :
Kharagpur Junction came up in 1898-99. On one side, Bengal Nagpur Railway’s Kharagpur-Cuttack line was opened on New Year’s Day in 1899. On the other hand, the opening of the bridge over the Rupnarayan River at Kolaghat, on 19 April 1900, connected Howrah with Kharagpur. Kharagpur was also linked with Sini the same year. The line was ready in 1898-99. The Kharagpur-Midnapore branch line was opened to traffic in 1901.Kharagpur has the world's third longest railway platform with a length of 1,072.5 metres (3,519 ft).It is the busiest junction station in South Eastern Railway Zone after Howrah. Hence, it is termed as Gateway to South Eastern Railway. It is also famous as a place where the present Indian Cricket Captain has worked as a Traveling Ticket Examiner(TTE)for sometime before he joined the Indian Team in 2004.

A common scene on Indian public places whether it is Railway Station or Bus stop. Well spotted sadus. I like your pic but the sadhu should be a little close.
Thanks for sharing

Salam Farhat. Not the usual mad rush that one expects. Your I-phone camera has done a good job exposure and detail wise. Best wishes. Klaudio.
CLODO (29914) 2014-07-03 2:15
almost no one pn the plateform, it's incredible. only 2 sadhus in orange gown looking at the blue train. Nice perspective.
holmertz (39427) 2014-07-03 2:20
For a big Indian junction this doesn't look too busy at the moment. The relative emptiness makes the sadhus more obvious. I am fascinated by the posture of the sadhu lying down in the background. I wouldn't be surprised if he could actually sleep in such a position. This is a simple but nice scene from daily life, and considering it was taken with a mobile phone the quality is quite good.

quelle vue de l'intérieur de cette gare superbe avec les personnage la perspective sur le bleu du train superbe.
Bravo et amitié
Royaldevon (28337) 2014-07-03 2:56
Your viewpoint creates an image of speed, though the train is stationary! Our eyes follow the converging lines rapidly!
You have captured a wealth of details to help us understand the context of an Indian railway station. I particularly like the inclusion of the sadhus.
Have a lovely day,
jhm (137518) 2014-07-03 4:11

On voit que la modernité fait son apparition à petits pas dans cet endroit. Un beau contraste entre le train et l'homme au bâton qui attend près du tas de pierres.
dip (23532) 2014-07-03 6:33

Dear farhat great and very interested picture from indian station with the blu very orinale train and the old women sliping
ikeharel (55200) 2014-07-03 8:46
Always vibrant scene on RR stations, Farhat, and no exception here.
Good view along the train, DOF and clarity well collected.
The one Sadhu stretched on the black boxes is drawing much attention on photo, though I do not see people noticing him. The other old-guy majestically sit in fine pose.
Great decision to take with your cell, intriguing moment collected.
ourania (29309) 2014-07-03 14:13
I'm sure that "busy schedules" will not prevent you from taking photos, you'll keep noticing interesting scenes around you and your phone has proven to be very reliable as a camera. This scene is great and you captured it effectively. There's great perspective and clarity and an effective third repetition of the orange colour that strengthens the scene. The Sadhus are eye-catching and interesting, especially the one sleeping outside the "sleeper class" car. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
Kamilutka (8095) 2014-07-04 1:48
now this is interesting scene especially if one looks closer and starts noticing details of the scene. The people gathered on the platform are engrossed in some odd activities. The whole situation has been nicely captured and framed.
Thanks for sharing

Ciao farhat, lovely composition with nice people, wonderful colors, excellent perspective and splendid light, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio
clic (14712) 2014-07-04 7:38
What happened to the reclined Sadhu making clear his 'wisdom'?!
In all likelihood, he couldn't wait for the sleeper class car!
Nice perspective full of exotism.
Noel_Byrne (22691) 2014-07-04 11:58
Amazing depth in this everyday candid scene, and an excellent documentary on the condition of the stations. I note the construction materials, but apart from that it looks very clean, no litter and clean paths. The man sitting is a great element in your scene.
Miguel82 (22307) 2014-07-04 20:13
Sleeper class in Indian trains are only adaptated on short journeys if you tolerate the heat Fabbs. Two saddhus are waiting on the quay, India has the biggest railway system of the world, it's also a huge employer, regards

I really like traveling by train, and the scenes at different stations have their own character, interesting people and interesting types of behavior, well captured
Apurba20 (984) 2014-07-05 0:39
Nice informative commentary and an interesting shot. Of course, something like this is not new in the Indian railway stations. As for the cleanliness part, recently, there has been some active steps being taken to ensure improvement. But as they, old habits die hard!
Loved this photo, in spite of the camera limitations.
Have a great weekend.
jcpix (13346) 2014-07-05 6:20
Worry not, you won't be forgotten. :) A fine result from your cell phone, and an image which just goes to show your instincts as a photographer, whether or not you have your camera available. It's funny, the man lying on the blocks was the first thing that caught my eye...must be the brighter orange attire. :) As you mention, this is a telling, documentary type image which relates the railway conditions. It's a wonderful depiction of daily life however, and is quite interesting just the same. A wonderfully deep perspective and details. Enjoy the weekend. Take good care.
photoray (11373) 2014-07-05 7:34
Interesting rail station scene, especially for me since I worked for the State of California Transportation Department's rail office, and worked on planning, design, construction and maintenance of stations.
Our stations and passenger cars are usually clean, but we continue to try increasing ridership. Too many Californians are in love with their cars and will not utilize trains or buses.
Thanks for sharing,

Very nice capture of the daily life of people. The station doesn't look very busy but enough activities. Good lighting and nice details. Well done, tfs.

good p.o.v. nice the contrast of colors and details.
mirosu (13155) 2014-07-06 4:15
Excellent perspective, I like how you diagonally placed the train and the station. The inclusion of people around the train adds nice life to the scene.
Excellent focusing, superb deep DOF.
Very well done.
p.s. Sorry for delayed comments, but I do not have internet access every day during my recent journey.
Cricri (104293) 2014-07-06 4:43
Très belle scène de vie, bonne prise en diagonale du train, le sadhu assit parterre avec son bâton et celui coucher bizarrement :-) bonne lumière et présentation
macjake (54830) 2014-07-06 7:47
I absolutely love train station photos!
and this is another great one.
there is a true rustic quality here, especially with the construction material on the right.
fine collection of colors.
and no, we won't forget you on TE!
serp2000 (39248) 2014-07-06 23:56
Clever composition, I like this point of view, the white strip of the sky is amazing boarder between the train and the roof. I do remember my trip to India, and I had have plan to take train for a travelling. But we did it in a sleepr bus.
PiotrF (6668) 2014-07-07 14:55
Very interesting scene from Railway Station.Perspective and depth are perfect taken. Wonderful picture with excellent colours and sharpness.Interesting note.
nikkitta (14308) 2014-07-08 11:08
The first idea is of a clear station, strange with no waiting crowds
Well taken capture with good perspective
But what call my attention is the sadhu at the back, he deserved a close capture, is he waiting and sleeping that way?, never seen that way
Well done , tfs

So this is the train in India. It's another daily life in India you're showing us. Thanks for sharing.
mcmtanyel (12017) 2014-07-10 21:26
This is a great photo for one that has been snapped by a phone. The colors and DOF are great. Except for the blown out sky, which most cameras would also yield, it is immaculate. More importantly, your composition has done justice to the scene with the two sadhus taking the predominant space. Quite well done, congrats & TFS! Looking forward to your more regular participation,
claudeD (31703) 2014-07-11 5:54
as a railway fan I like your picture here very much. Very good composition, fine colors and sharpness. Very well done.TFS.

Good morning and happy start to the week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.
adramad (36869) 2014-07-13 8:29
Superb perspective that gives the train, with the same slip diagonal image, the presence of people give a vital touch to the image, the image very mean man with a white beard.
Good management of the brightness and sharpness.
All the best.
delpeoples (52897) 2014-07-15 3:43
Namaskar dear Farhat
This is hilarious. Where else in the world would you see these brightly coloured men doing inhuman acrobatics in the middle of a railway station. What an amazing country and I'm surprised you got such a clean, clear shot, as I know I would have been laughing to hard and the camera would have shaken too much :) Excellent light, sharpness and depth. And an amazing composition.
pierrefonds (56040) 2014-07-16 13:14
The presence of the people is giving life to the scene. The length of the train is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and the colors of the train. Have a nice day.
asajernigan (21066) 2014-07-18 9:06
Trains are one of my favorite things to see and you have presented this one nicely. The angle of the shot is great creating direction in the scene. The people in traditional dress provide nice points of interest throughout the shot.
adores (35614) 2014-07-21 17:18
Stations are always so full of life! They seem to be really tired, specially the one in background, and their clothes really catch our eye. A very well captured scene!
fotka (3391) 2014-07-22 6:03
An excellent pov of the train at the station. The photo shows a piece of daily life from India.
Even you said that you didn't have proper camera the photo is very good.
PaulVDV (21585) 2014-08-09 15:54
A beautiful daily life shot of an Indian railway station.
The Sadhus add a lot of interest to the picture.
I once spent half a night in an Indian station waiting for my train and I remember there's still a lot going on after most of the people have left.
Good composition and excellent depth.
Best regards, Paul
stego (23962) 2014-09-10 17:37
A photo much accomplished, as it is very well composed, nicely balanced graphically and it is a great presentation of the daily life on that place, with the bonus of that old man with the colourful turban or hat and the other one dressed in orange taking a nap in a strange position. The perfectionists may complaint about the overexposed white sky, but considering the circumstances, the quality is amazing and I would be much happy with it even if I was the photographer armed with a "real" camera.
TFS, regards, José.
