Some tidbits about the Nepali Dance Form.

Dance is a form of art. It liberates one from the drabness and monotony of existence and uplifts his soul. Dance in Nepal is no exception to this fact. It is to be noted that Nepalese dance bears a lot of similarity to Indian traditional dance. One of the reasons attributed to this may be the geographical proximity of the two countries. Given below are different types dance forms in Nepal:-

Mahakali Dance

The Mahakali Dance is one of the most popular dances in Nepal. This dance is based on 'Mahakali Mahalaxmi', a religious story from Hindu Puran. It pays tribute to the 3 goddesses Mahalaxmi, Mahakali and Kumari. According to the Puran, they came down from heaven to overthrow the demons who have been tormenting mankind with misery. The dance portrays joys and happiness after the demons are vanquished.

Lakhey Dance

The Lakhey Dance is one of the classical forms of dance in Nepal. According to the common tradition, Lakhey are man eating demons who live in the interior regions of forest. They hunt animals and celebrate when they get a good victim.

Monkey Dance

It is a popular dance form in which teenagers wear traditional dresses and bear sticks in their hands. This dance form is based on the epic Ramayana where the monkeys celebrate after Lord Ram vanquishes Ravana and rescues Sita from the clutches of the demons.

Khyak Dance

Khyaks are supernatural beings following different Gods and Goddesses. Their sole aim is to frighten humans at night, but they are actually harmless. This dance is performed only to express the mischievous nature of the Khyaks.

Kawan (Skeleton) Dance

The Kawan Dance forms an interesting part of dances in Nepal. It is popularly believed that Kawans are evil spirits that accompany Gods and goddesses. They are usually seen at several crossings and cremation grounds. They are known to trouble people with stomach problems.

Devi Daitya Sangram

This is also known as the battle of Goddess and Demon. This dance centers around a demon who falls in love at first sight with a beautiful damsel. He proposes the lady but she tells him that she will yield to him only if he can defeat her in a fight. This fuels the ego of the demon who readily agrees to fights with her. But when he finds her everywhere and is unable to win over her, he becomes afraid and asks for mercy. Then the lady turns herself to goddess Kali and she stands on him.
