Photographer's Note

Jayanti on the foothills of the Himalayas, was once a busy dolomite mine. Due to environmental concerns the mine was closed down and with no other income option the place died a natural death. Soon the railway link that connected this place to the rest of the country was severed and over the years Jayanti turned into a ghost town. Being situated right in the middle of a tiger reserve bordering Bhutan, Jayanti gets a flow of oranges during the winter months from the neighbouring country. Here two young brother and sister try to earn some extra income for their beleagured family selling oranges under a huge banyan tree which forms the town center. As i aimed my camera, the boy stared right back while the little girl put a protective hand on his brother. I rather liked their sibling love and reminded me of a poem by Shel Silverstein which I share with you.

For Sale
Brother for sale, only 50 cents.
Brother for sale, he's not a big expense.
You can hug him, you can bug him,
you can buy or rent.
Brother for sale, only 50 cents.

Would anyone like to buy a slightly used big brother?
Even if you have one now, trade him for another.
He will help you with the chores and he's really clean.
The only problem is sometimes he can be so mean.

Brother for sale, twenty-five cents.

Brother for sale, only 10 cents...........
He will always pick you up when you take a fall.
And he's good at showing you how to catch a ball.
He always tells these funny jokes and does this crazy dance.
Hey wait, he sounds like a pretty nice guy. Let's give him one more chance.

My brother's not for sale,
not for any price.
My brother's not for sale,
I guess he will suffice.
I love to hug him, I love to bug him,
he's really rather nice.
My brother's not for sale, not for any price.

PP : Desaturation and selective colour change of the oranges.
