Photographer's Note

The picture was taken at Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary located at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas in Alipurduar Sub-Division of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal, India.

The full grown Indian Python was still asleep when we spotted it during an early winter morning elephant safari in the park. We were really moved by the fearsome beauty of this enormous reptile.

The Sanctuary is spread across 216.51 km2 (83.59 sq mi) of vast grassland with patches of riverine forests and is known to be the home of Indian One Horned Rhinoceros and a wide variety of other animals, reptiles and birds. It was declared as a sanctuary in 1941 for protection of the great variety of flora and fauna.
