Unfortunately travel & work allowed me little time to post pictures last week....hope I’ll make up from now on...
Wanted to share with you a slice of daily life from rural Bengal, my home state
Located almost 130 km from Kolkata, Geonkhali is nestled at the confluence of River Rupnarayan and River Ganges. At Geonkhali, the rivers become so wide that they appear like the sea, with the opposite bank barely visible. The view is truly breathtaking. The riverfront is flanked with a green wilderness. One can catch country boats from the jetty or ferry ghat and crossover to Gadiara or nearby Nurpur. Here is one of the ferry boats, bearing number 786 (written in Bengali script in green...also written is "Please do not climb on the roof" :-)), which we had taken coming from Nurpur. The same ferry boat was now ready to make the last return trip to Nurpur. It would become dark soon. The last light of the day created nice pastel hues.
You would notice how narrow is the plank of wood which the people are using to board the ferry boat. It is barely 6 to 8 inches in width and hence the long bamboo which the chap on the right is holding quite nonchalantly, is used by the passengers to balance themselves as they climb up (or disembark). Quite risky it looks, but the local people do this act effortlessly, day in, day out.

Hello Angshuman ,
An excellent capture of this boat and scene of the daily life . I like especially how the man hold the long wooden perch , to help people to climb into the boat .

Hello Mr. B,
I have not been very active in TE lately, just like you. Moreover, it is 4:00 am here in Washington, DC. Accordingly, it is a pleasure when I just made appearance, logging on and finding a new post from you. The composition superb, with the small group of travelers boarding the river boat.

Very attractive scene in perfect colors. I like the POV, very well taken.

The distance between the boat and the horizon is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the détails and coulours of the biat and the action of the passengers. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colours. Have a nie day.

Une très belle construction d'image avec ces deux diagonales qui se rencontrent au centre. Les vêtements colorés ressortent parfaitement sur fond de ciel gris. Une belle scène de la vie quotidienne de cet endroit.

I like this picture very much. It has great colours, a good foreground and a couple of diagonals that benefit the composition very nicely. It gives us a good idea of local daily life and the hazards of local journeys in parts of the world. The light is beautifully handled.

Interesting moment in which we can see how the people become accustomed to certain limitations and risks.
Good shot. TFS

Hi Angshu my बाधव,
This photo reminds me about the astute people of India, always finding ways to be efficient with the least resources. Can you imagine such a scene in Europe or America? Of course not, as we subscribe to all sorts of security standards and procedures, so you can only admire the street sense typical of Asia and India in particular.
I'm really having a smile while looking at your photo, as it epitomizes the easy going attitude of Indians and it makes me feel the same way I was when visiting your country.
This scene is tightly framed, closer to the action that is taking place and we almost feel intimate with your subjects, like if we were about to get on board ourselves, waiting in line and getting ready to grab the perch. But with my heavy backpack, I would probably struggle not to fall in the river... :-p))

Bonjour, cher ami Angshu,
Allez l'embarquement va commencer ! j'aime beaucoup l'utilisation d'une grande perche à usage de main courante.
Une image vivante et très réaliste.
Une fois encore, l'image est percutante.
Kamilutka (8103) 2013-04-10 1:32
well done for catching this scene - it has been very well composed and you managed also to capture the dynamism and movement. The people climbing the boat are contrasting with the man on the top of it who seems to be motionless and quite indifferent to whatever is happening there. Great colors.
Thanks for sharing

nice shot fro m your home state, rather rarely seen on TE. Excellent scene. Haha, I remember going by similar boat in Myanmar and the way how to get on it. Wonderful Indian women.

I very much enjoy this picture. The viewpoint is excellent with diagonals created for both the boat and the boarding ladder. Exquisite colours and light. The 'handrail' is unusual and rather impressive!
Beautiful work - TFS.
Kind Regards, Ann

very nice the snapshot from the daily life of the natives with the way that embark on the boat as the wooden 'banister' that is the eye catching of the image.
Excellent the light and the colour management as the clarity and the beauty of the image.

A superb daily life scene and I like the angled composition with the gangplank and passengers adding perspective and lead in lines to the boat. Good sharpness and saturation. Nice warm cold color contrasts between the red and blue. Tfs!

Beautiful photo of the daily life in your country. this reminded me of the book I read called "The Hungry Tide" by Amitah Ghos. Some of the scene decribe in his book would be like this in my imagination. Beautiful glow of the light that illuminated the whole area. Love everything about it, the way the people walking in and up to the boat. It lead us and inviting us in. The color are rich with deep tone and yet very natural, I feel like being transported to a different place and time.

Yes I'm back on TE after I had only very limited time in 2011 and 2012 due to my workload and finally I fell and broke my left wrist in February 2013 which was followed by a surgery. Now I'm recovering posting older shots as I should not lift a camera if I do not want to cause damage to my hand.
I like your shot, boat number 786 it is a typical boat on the Ganges. The passengers boarding it boost the dynamic of your shot, as well as it adds vibrant colour hues. It is an excellent POV, well done

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
a peculiar style of climb on to the ferry boat in this nice scene of the daily life.
The narrow plank of wood and the amazing bamboo handrail for the passengers they are a few gorgeous elements in your composition.
I applaud your good management of light and colors.

Seeing these truly cultural images from India are what I enjoy most. Just look at that boat! The narrow bow of the boat is very cool indeed, sharp like a needle :)
love the narrow plank too, and the man holding the rail.
A+ for the subject material!

A very good scene! You captured very well the pose of the man helping the women getting on the boat. Seems he's paying attention to something else. Good and colourful daily scene! You framed it really well!

Great shot around here and you have done well to control it to convey the real atmosphere. It's full of vibrancy and by concentrating on the diagonal figs has strengthened this close shot tremendously and the colours are great; contrasting so well against the misty background. I enjoy looking at different cultures and this picture shows alot of a typical scene of everyday life and I llove the title too!
Excellent slice of life shot. Congrats

This is super, my goodness though it looks a bit precarious the board to get on the boat, fantastic colours, light, management and splendid presentation.
Congratulations on your eighth year on TE, we have viewed and learnt so much from your country and surrounds.
All the best. Iain.
