Some tidbits about the Lake Tsongmo.

Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim, India, some 40 kilometres (25 mi) away from Gangtok at altitude of 3,780 m (12,400 ft).

The road to Nathu La passes the lake on north side. The Chinese border crossing is only some 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east-northeast in a straight line, but some 18 kilometres (11 mi) by road.

Changu Lake also called "Tsongmo Lake" means "source of lake" is a lake situated around 35 - 40 km away from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. It is a natural lake on top of mountains. It is 3780 meter (12400 feet) above see level and oval in shape, 1 Km long and fifteen meeter deep. The lake freezes during the winter months. Best time to visit is Mid May to August. The area is controlled by the Indian Army and required special permission to visit the place. They will ask you to visit the lake before noon due to inclement weather. Local travel agents will help you to get the permission. Bus ticket from Gangtok to Changu Lake and back will cost Rs. 150/- Cabs and Jeeps are available at Gangtok for Rs. 550/- to Rs. 900/- Heavy woolen cloths required to be worn throughout the year. Rides on Yaks are offered at the lake side. You can have tea and snacks at the lake side during the tourist season. It is advised to avoid traveling to Changu Lake those who have breathing problem due to scarcity of air at this altitude.
