Photographer’s Note

The rickshaw is the worlds oldest form of wheeled transportation. When I was in Calcutta in 2001 they were a very common sight. Rickshaw drivers are used by children going to school, to transport women with their shopping and to run numerous other errands.

The rickshaw drivers could be seen pounding the streets barefoot, weaving in and out of traffic and often asleep in the cabin of the rickshaw at night.

I loved the look on this drivers face, he looked so proud sitting atop his rickshaw waiting for the next trip.

This image is from a scanned photo taken in 2001 on a Canon EOS 400.
